In a recent post, Randy mentioned that our new 3Bman will not come from within the organization, and on the surface, he's likely right.
But depending upon which pitchers we sign, there might be no other choice.
IF... and I say IF (As in LORD, PLEASE MAKE IS SO!) we manage to sign both Lester AND Shields, (yeah. that's going to happen), there would not be money to sign other players.
I've suggested before that we move Belt to LF, resign Morse, and move him to 1B. He's much better there than in the OF, and we DO need his bat in the line up with Pablo gone.
In my (ridiculous pipe-dream) scenario, we fill 3B from within.
Now if we DON'T sign both pitchers, then everything changes. Then I believe Randy's right; we go outside the organization.
But I think we all need to remember Brian's history, and we only have to look at 2014 to see it; he often does NOT make a big, foolish move to fill a hole (2nd base this year), at the beginning of the year, waiting, instead to see how things turn out with "other" players; Adrianza, Uggla, Hicks, etc. that he used this year.
I don't want to see him rush to sign someone just to fill a hole.
I still would give the kid a shot in Spring Training to see how he does... and then adjust on the run during the season.
I'm off for the holidays, and I wish a GREAT THANKGIVING to everyone!!!!!

Boly -- IF... and I say IF (As in LORD, PLEASE MAKE IS SO!) we manage to sign both Lester AND Shields, (yeah. that's going to happen), there would not be money to sign other players. Rog -- If the Giants sign EITHER -- especially Lester -- there will be precious little money left over. At best likely a 2nd-tier guy and a bargain basement pick up. That's not to say going with either of those pitchers would be bad. The thing of it is that I would just LOVE to see the Giants somehow address their immediate needs and find a way to sign Moncada. Tomas might be a star, but it sounds as if Moncada has a shot at being a super star. But likely not right away for the 19-year-old. I just don't know how forward looking the Giants can afford to be. They've got plenty they will need to spend simply to meet their immediate needs. But if the Giants approach Moncada as an investment and keep their payroll budget the same WITHOUT his pay entering the picture, they might able to pick up a one- or two-year solution for third base or left field and then pencil Moncada in. The problem with these Cuban guys is that they're not bargains anymore. The success of the guys before them has driven up their prices. The Giants may have to do more back loading of contracts than usual. But they will be freeing up a fair amount of money next winter, and supposedly in 2017 the stadium will be paid off. I'd like to see the Giants build a very good team for the REGULAR season too. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/2599/search-spock-mean-thirdbaseman#ixzz3KCJAjdSN

Tomas is supposedly close to making up his mind and he has four bids, including the Giants. Of course there could always be a mystery team lurking.
