From what was reported, San Diego's offer was the highest. So much for Pablo just being greedy.

Something must have been going on with Pablo. One would think that he wouldn't have left if the Giants were essentially willing to match at the level he signed.
Now Pablo will need to win over a new set of fans, and Boston can be a tough crowd. Pablo didn't leave strictly for the money, and the Giants certainly weren't cheap with him.

Pablo's contract is supposedly 5/98 with a sixth year team option, which I believe both the Padres and Red Sox would have topped. He was obviously unhappy in SF, probably with ownership, maybe with the constant criticisms of his conditioning. As I said, this move is probably best for all concerned. He's not worth that much money, and certainly Boston can afford him not being worth it better than the Giants can.
