Did this guy give himself the nickname or did he just think it would be cool to steal it from James Worthy without any evidence to back it up? This postseason his ERA is 5.63 and his WHIP is 1.63. Horrible.
Big Shame James is more like it.

He's a good pitcher, but I'm sure the name was just given to him because of the obvious rhyme. Hopefully at the end of this series, the nickname will be something we laugh at.

How about James (I pissed away the World Series and couldn't hold back) Shields? Sorry about that, but sadly it came to mind.
Really though, what is the point in coming up with degrading nicknames?

Rog-Really though, what is the point in coming up with degrading nicknames?
---boly says---
Firstly, because it's fun.
Secondly because players 'often,' but not always, come up with names for themselves.
Nicknames are a part of baseball. Always have been.

Unless they are done in fun and aren't sarcastic, degrading nicknames are lousy. They're something a child would do. These are grown men getting paid a lot of money to play a game in front of a large audience. I'm pretty sure they can take a few mean spirited names and chants. It's a part of the game, always has been.
This ever growing oversensitive society we live in is far more damaging than a silly nickname.
Bullying? Gimme a break, if you don't like getting bullied, learn to fight. I wouldn't promote kids to fight, but sometimes you don't have a choice.
No, not in this society. We have evolved, my ass.
I know I'm younger than all of you, but even in my youth things were much different.
ADHD? In my day that was called being a spoiled brat. The treatment for such a "disorder" was an open hand to the bare ass. It worked far better than over medicating your children due to a prognosis by someone who got their degree online. Drug your kids at an early age and they learn that drugs will make their problems go away.
This post escalated quickly.
Back to my point, Rog, I am not the type to yell obscene nicknames at players. But as a baseball fan I know it's part of the game, and while it's not my thing, I have no problem with it.
How many of us have used the nickname "the freak"..that's not a very complimentary name.
I've seen Pablo roll his eyes at "Kungfu Panda." Let's face it, that name was slapped on him primarily because he has the same body type of a panda, which is not complimentary. But, he just goes along with it because the fans like it, and the players have fun with it.
Either way, ball players are paid to get cheered AND booed. If you don't like the atmosphere, maybe it's not the game for you.

Some of my favorite nicknames were put downs.
Dick Stuart-Doctor Strange Glove; One I have seen, but I was AT DODGER stadium when I heard it used; "The Big Awful."
Curt Blefary-"Clank"
There are others, but those are my favorites.
Others I've heard are "Schnozz" for Ernie Lombardi who had a notoriously large nose
Pudge-Rodriguez and Fish
Goofy-Lefy Gomez
Gabby Hartnet was known as "Old Tomatoe Face."
Al Simmons was known as "Bucket foot Al," for constantly pulling his left foot off the plate and 'stepping into the bucket."
Pitcher Milt Pappas was known as "Gimpy."
How about Mike Hargrove; The "Human rain delay."
If they're clever, and all of the above, IMHO, are, they're funny and okay.
