Glad the Giants have got this far but it just seems like no matter how much they battle the stars aren't aligned for them reaching another WS this year. All the injuries and obstacles are catching up with them. Huddy couldn't hold a 4 run lead and 3 of them crossed with 2 outs. We bomb Lackey in the first and then couldn't touch him after that and he's their 3rd starter. They still can turn it around but right now, it's just ugly. Even Bochy is getting worked.

Bochy is not having a good series, but neither is Matheny. Putting in Choate with the game on the line and his best relievers in the bullpen was a big error. If Belt is coming up that's one thing, but you have Crawford who he's walked in about half his lifetime at bats and who hits lefties better, followed by a righty in Perez. Then you have two struggling left handed hitters to follow. The Cardinals left hand hitters have power, the ones we're playing don't. Go with your best!

I think both Managers are sort of "hamstrung" by really NOT being deep in some areas.
We're shallow on the bench because of the Morse and Pagan injuries, and that effects some of Bruce's moves.
A little different on Matheny's end, but he doesn't really have an all star caliber team either. And the loss of Yadier is a killer.

of course I didn't say its luck...only a desperate fool would think that. Some people read stars to foretell things that might happen in the future...doesn't mean that those things were caused by luck.

After two innings, Vogelsong is not fooling anyone. The Cards are putting together MUCH better ABs here in SF than we are. This is why I was not encouraged even after we won yesterday

I agree that Tim is a wasted spot. That long relief role belongs to Petit and he's been one of their post season MVP's. Bochy just doesn't have the heart to do to him what he did to Zito.

there is absolutely no question, that Tim has fallen to THE last spot in the bullpen. I wish it wasn't so, but it's a spot he earned, just as Petit EARNED the right to be the long man... and the guy called upon in that situation.
I also agree with you that Bochy didn't have the heart to do to Tim, what he had to do with Zito; leave him off the roster.
But did he really have a choice?
I'm not sure he did.
Kontos? Gutierrez? The later, for me, is a no brainer. No way.
Kontos...?
I think I would have gone with tim, too.

If Tim isn't going to be trusted, I replace him with Brown. An extra bunter, runner and defensive player could be valuable the way we have played this postseason.

Again, it's not that I disagree, I don't.
I agree wit you, Randy, but Bochy LOVES having eleventeen pitchers in the pen, so I guess Tim stays.
Me? We have toooooooooo few bench players.
THAT could come back to bite us.

I believe it was on the MLB Network that I heard them describing how good the depth was on both the Giants and the Cardinals. How huge a change is that from the beginning of the season, when the Giants had very little on the bench, and one of its modest Four A bench players was starting at second base?
One factor that each of the even-numbered post season teams has had has been the way each improved its roster as the season went on. Each of the three teams also made key free agent signings over the winter. And both the 2010 and 2014 teams added key rookies during the season.
For those such as Tim Kawakami who say the Giants have got this NLCS in the bag, I would say that I certainly like their chances, especially with Madison Bumgarner going tonight.
But I might also caution about the 2012 Giants having TWICE come back from such a brink, about how the Cardinals treated none other than Clayton Kershaw, and that the one Giants pitcher who lost to the Nationals was none other than their own ace.
The Cardinals are as much long shots as the Giants were in both the NLDS and the NLCS. But the Giants showed that magical teams shouldn't be counted out -- and the Cardinals themselves have been somewhat magical under Mike Matheny.

Boagie- I'm not sure moving forward Tim won't be called upon before Strickland or Machi.
Machi has been in an extended funk and Strickland has been hammered by lefties.

Rog -- I'm sure Bruce is hoping he won't need to use any of the trio. But I'm sure he hasn't given up on Machi completely. And I doubt he would be upset at using Strickland to complement Javier Lopez in an inning.
Regarding Tim, I'm sure he's hoping for the magic of 2010 and 2012. But I also suspect he's worried about taking the risk in an important situation.
It wouldn't seem that Bumgarner would be out of the game early tonight, but it's certainly at least possible. I think that would be a time when Tim would be used. Petit threw three innings yesterday, so it would seem that Tim would be the #1 long man today. If he finally pitches and pitches well, I could see Bruce using him more frequently and in a somewhat more demanding role.
I think Bruce had expected to use Tim by now (and indeed said that Tim would have come in had the 18-inning Washington game gone into the 19th), but just hasn't seen what he felt was a comfortable chance.
I've got to say I've been SHOCKED by Petit. Over the winter I saw some numbers that put him in a nice light, but I certainly didn't expect THIS much. Turned out the Giants had the best 6th starter in the majors!

I have COMPLETELY lost faith in Machi. He's throwing up more hangers than a one hour cleaners.

The Giants think Strickland was tipping his pitches, and it's a rational explanation for the long balls considering the stuff he has. Hopefully he works that out and comes back strong in the Series. There's no hoping for Machi, who has just fallen apart. The Giants won't do it, but I'd definitely activate Kontos over Machi for the Series.
