I can't remember the exact year, but it was some time in the middle of the 1980's, late in a season.
Vin Scully labled it, "the year of the streak," because soooo many teams had long, really hot winning streaks. The extremes before and afte the streaks were huge.
So based on the utter collapse of:
The Brewers, Braves, Reds and Giants, I've labeled this year, the "Year of the Collapse."
I was aware of how the Braves imploded down the stretch, as did Milwaukee. Monumental folds equally as bad as the Giants blowing a 9 1/2 game lead.
Then today, while watching the Reds-Pirates game, praying for a Pittsburgh win and a Stl loss so there'd be a playoff, I learned that at the break, Cincinatti was but a 1/2 game out of first.
Then THEY went in the toilet!
4 teams, and there's likely more I don't know of.
But 4 National League teams with HUGE implosions.
The Phillies and the Reds folded in 1964. 2 teams. Not 4.
Wow! 4 Might not be the biggest or most ever, for all time, but It's the BIGGEST I've ever seen.

I just don't get you at all, Boly. The Giants made the playoffs, and have the same exact record as the first wild card, although they're going to Pittsburgh because they lost the tie breaker. If I somehow missed the entire season and just read your posts I would think the Giants went 50-112 and were the worst team ever. And by the way, not every team that misses the playoffs "implodes" and "chokes." The Reds, for example, lost their best two players, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips, for the season. Coincidentally, that's when they "imploded." The Giants finished 88-74 and made the playoffs. This may amaze you, Boly, but a lot of Giants fans consider that a successful season. Your holding the team to too way high a standard, and I feel for you, my friend, because instead of being happy about the season and excited about the playoffs, you're popping anti depressants!

Boly I have to agree with Rx here. 18 teams' fans would love to be in our shoes right now. I play in a monthly poker tournament and there's a quote we sometimes use..."a chip and a chair" is all you need to be alive and still end up in the money. The team that won 6 elimination games in 2012 is still alive, man! To quote the Partridge Family, Boly..."come on get happy!"

The Giant's fall from first place with a 9 1/2 game lead was indeed the quickest in history. But as the guys pointed out, the Giants back and with the help of the 2nd Wild Card, are still alive.
In 1993, the Giants won over 100 games but lost out the playoffs by a game. The rule was changed the following season to add a Wild Card team, so the Giants just missed the rule by one year. This is the first time for the 2nd Wild Card, and the Giants made it by a year.
What's done is done. Some of us overestimated the early-season Giants. Some almost gave up when they were bad during mid-season, they had a hard time even winning a series. The Giants have bounced back, proving both of those groups wrong.
The Giants won 88 games. Didn't they seem like an 86-90 win team entering the season? They finished right in the middle of that range. How they did so was weird, but the fact is the Giants finished the season at least as well as could have been expected given their injuries.
As fans, we're darn lucky to have our team be in the post season. A year ago they wouldn't have been.

All of you missed the ENTIRE point of my post.
It was NOT a shot at the Giants, it was an OBSERVATION on how many teams badly floundered.
One of the points being I can't remember 4 teams falling that suddenly when it looked like they were just starting to hit a good stride.

Thanks for straightening us out on your meaning, Boly. I think you're right that we all DID miss it. I think we were influenced by your avoidance of sharp objects!

It's a long season for everybody, filled with hot streaks and cold streaks for even the best and worst teams. What you perceive as collapsing or choking can actually just be a team that was playing way over its head most of the season just winding up where they belong based on their talent. Certainly that's true in the case of the Milwaukee Brewers, who nobody thought would be contenders this year. I think you can make a case for the Braves being chokers though, because they had a lot of talent and for some reason this seems to happen to them every year at around the same time. Once it happens a couple of times, I think they begin to expect it.

Mark -- It's a long season for everybody, filled with hot streaks and cold streaks for even the best and worst teams.
Rog -- Are you saying it was the best of teams; it was the worst of teams?
