I liked Krukow once upon a time, that time has long since passed. I would even prefer JT Snow over Krukow at this point.

Both Kruk and Kuip have worn on me this season, Boagie. I always call them the best in the business, but I think they've kind of gotten stale. They're rarely funny anymore, and they say the same things over and over. I'd much rather listen to Miller and Flem. Every pitcher has the same exact repertoire of pitches according to Krukow. Every pitcher is a sinker ball pitcher. I don't think a pitcher has come in the game all year that Krukow hasn't said throws hard sink. And Kuiper needs to learn to pronounce names. I've had to listen to him all year call Mike Morse, "Morris." It's not even a hard name, it's one syllable! The other night he was calling Tanner Roarke of the Nats "Row-ark" all night. Then Blevins started warming up in the pen and he was calling him Bill-evins. This isn't rocket science, these are easy names! And be honest with the viewers. Hicks is terrible, Adrianza doesn't belong in the majors, Tim Lincecum is not "back" every time he pitches a scoreless inning, Romo blew the game last night, Bochy intentionally walking the go ahead run on base was stupid, stop insulting our intelligence!

Kuiper is still ok in my book. I think he unwillingly gets sucked into Krukow's schtick. It's not like he can just tell Krukow to shut up on air, although I wish he would. But I agree, I'd prefer listening to Flemming and Miller, unfortunately KNBR comes up in fuzzy for me.

Krukow is stale. I've been saying that for years. And he's pushing for Lincecum way too hard. Kuip still sounds ok to me. I enjoy Miller and Flem alot. I think Kruk is getting old and starting to lose it a bit.
Still, if you want to appreciate them again, try to get the Colorado feed and spend a day listening to those balloon heads. Guaranteed headache by the third inning.

I guess I'll be the lone dissenting voice. To me Flemming is 'just another guy' in the booth.
Yeah, Krukow's seemed to grow stale, but let's not forget, most of us have been listening to him for over 110 games for a number of years. It sounds stale becuase there is only so much new that you can create.
Trust me. I can relate to this. I teach Spanish II. Have been teaching the same class with the same book for over 15 years. I KNOW I say the same things over and over and over, and I'm not talking about teaching stuff; I'm talking other stuff.
It's hard to come up with new every night. It really is.
Try it. It ain't easy.

I don't like your analogy, Boly, sorry. You're teaching the same thing over and over and using the same book, you're supposed to say the same thing repeatedly. At least it's a new class every year that hasn't heard it before! Krukow is talking to fans who have heard all his stuff already. Repeating is boring. And it shows he (and Kuiper) are not doing their homework and going through the motions. They're living off their past reputations.

Kuiper, Miller and Flemming don't seem to have a problem keeping it fresh.
As you point out, teaching is alot like broadcasting. As a teacher you had a lesson plan to follow, year after year I'm sure there was alot of repetition. I would equate a lesson plan with a broadcaster's notes. I'm perfectly fine hearing time after time about how Posey hits lefties well, or how Tulowitzki hits well off Matt Cain. However, good teachers and broadcasters also have anecdotes, jokes, and perhaps a little bit of banter here and there to keep their audience entertained and interested in the usual "lesson plan." Krukow has the same schtick EVERY night. I'm sure if you had the same routine EVERY day with the same students they would have lost interest.
Luckily I'm interested in baseball, but if Krukow were a teacher and trying to teach me a subject I wasn't that interested in, I can assure you my grade would not be a good one, and it would partially be his fault.

Boagie -- I liked Krukow once upon a time, that time has long since passed. I would even prefer JT Snow over Krukow at this point. Rog -- I have picked some points with Krukow such as the excellent ones you did here, Boagie, but JT is pretty bad. Not only that, but Mike does have outstanding chemistry with Duane Kuiper. Then again, if Mike says one more time that Tim Lincecum had only a fastball and a curve when he came to the majors, I might jump to your side. I also think "Down in the SQUAT" is descriptive -- but not every single time. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/2323/krukow#ixzz34dgrlNCI

Boly -- To me Flemming is 'just another guy' in the booth. Rog -- Dave is quite intelligent, he knows the game -- including the statistical side --, he isn't overbearing, he seems to know some of the players well yet keeps his objectivity, and his voice -- like Lon Simmons, but in a far different (and less effective) way -- is prone to cracking at really big moments. I'm not quite sure the reason, but when he first joined the booth, he sounded like an old-time baseball announcer to me. Now for me, Jon Miller's schtick is starting to wear a little thing. I still think he's excellent, but like anyone I suppose, he starts being repetitive in his approach. I still love him; I just don't love him quite as MUCH. But the Giants' four announcers are each quite good. And think of all the great announcers we've had in the Bay Area -- Simmons, Russ Hodges, Hank Greenwald and Bill King (one of the greatest ever in TWO sports, neither of which was baseball). Al Michaels (briefly). Lindsay Nelson and Tim McCarver (both briefly and not especially effectively). Dan Rusanowski, Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda. Even Roy (Shot on goal!) Storey. If I were to rank them, I would say King, Simmons and Miller have each performed at a Hall of Fame level (even with more strict Halls of Fame than the actual ones). I consider King to be among the all-time greats, even though I felt he was just so-so at baseball. Wayne Walker and Ted Robinson have done national stuff, and Fleming is getting more regional exposure. Nice to see you mention Barnett. Best color guy/analyst I've ever heard. King was incredibly good in the Raiders' heyday. I always turned the sound off on the tv and listened to Bill.

Bill was also exceptional in basketball, which I believe was his first sport to announce at Bradley University. The way Bill could go the game aferward was amazing. I'm sure he had game notes, but it was almost like hearing the game all over again.
One thing I wonder about is if our announcers are as good as they seem, or if we get used to their styles. Several years ago I was in the Midwest listening to Blackhawks hockey. At first the announcer seemed very poor, but after a couple of games he actually started to sound good.
I do think we've had some of the best though.
I know you like Hawk Harrelson, Allen. I recall listening to him back when Frank Thomas had lost his power, and Hawk's explanation of the corrections Frank needed to make seemed quite plausible and well thought out.
I have mentioned this before here, but the most disappointing announcer for me was Tim McCarver when he did 20 or so TV games for the Giants 15 or 20 years ago. Tim just didn't do his homework. He must have felt his knowledge of the game would carry him, and he didn't bother to do much research on the game.
Speaking of not doing one's research, the most embarrassing performance I have seen or heard came from Fred Williamson on Grambling football. A pass play would go something like this: "Back to pass ... and the pass is completed to (long pause) number 88!" Even Fred's spotters must not have been very good.
