I liked Gary Steward's take on the Giants, probably because it was close to my own in several respects.
Starting pitching -- Steward sees Madison Bumgarner as being a stud, with Cain, Lincecum and Hudson vying for #2 and Vogelsong the clear #5. He's comfortable with the rotation, although he worries a little about Cain (He doesn't know quite why.) and the 38-year-old Hudson. Is confident Lincecum will be successful in his attempted Koufax to Maddux change. Overall evaluation: Sees the rotation as a strength.
Catching -- Likes the added muscle on Buster Posey.
Infield -- Sees Brandon Belt as taking up where he left off last season. Is worried about the health of Marco Scutaro but sees the pop of Brandon Hicks as leading in the race for #6 infielder.
Outfield -- Expresses injury concerns about Angel Pagan and Mike Morse.
Bullpen -- Worries about depth, just when I was feeling better about it.
Age -- Worries that the Giants are close to making the change from "veteran presence" to simply being old. Belt, Pablo Sandoval and the two Brandons are exceptions, but most of the key players are now in their 30's. I hadn't really thought about this.
Injuries -- Mentions the obvious candidates in Scutaro, Pagan, Morse and Hudson. Worries it could be a big concern as it was last year.
Prediction -- Sees the Giants as a possible (likely?) wild card behind the Dodgers, who he mentions are pre-season World Series favorites. Worries about competition in the division from the Diamondbacks and Padres. Fears the Rockies could be lying in the weeds. More than anything else, Steward worries about the Giants' health. He does point out that the Giants had the best intra-division record of any team in the NL West but fell apart against lesser teams such as the Cubs.
We're less than two weeks away now. Hopefully this season won't turn into an April's Fools campaign as last year did.
