It doesn't seem long since we were saying that there weren't stars today like there were 50 years ago. I think we were wrong. Here are some examples of great players who have played this century:
Starting pitchers -- Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux and Pedro Martinez may be the best foursome of starting pitchers who retired within three years of each other EVER. Some say Clayton Kershaw is the best live-ball pitcher ever for his age.
Relief pitchers -- Mariano is the best relievers ever by any measure I know of. Trevor Hoffman might be #2. Craig Kimbrel might be the best reliever ever by age 25.
Catchers -- Buster Posey and Joe Mauer might eventually rank among the best catchers ever, and Mike Piazza is probably the best hitting catcher of all time.
First base -- Albert Pujols was one of the top first baseman of all time over the first 10 years of his career, and Joey Votto might turn out to be even better.
Second base -- Robinson Cano already looks like one of the best second basemen ever.
Shortstop -- Troy Tulowitzki has a hard time staying healthy, but when he does, he's about as good a two-way shortstop as we have seen.
Third base -- I believe this is the least represented position in the Hall, and I believe Evan Longoria will eventually join the list. Adrianne Beltre is an exceptional two-way player.
Left field -- Barry Bonds is one of the greatest all-around players ever. Manny Ramirez was also a great hitter.
Center field -- Whom am I missing here?
Right field -- Ken Griffey Jr and Ichiro stand out.
