We haven't really talked much about 2014 yet, but just for the moment, why not look ahead to 2015? What should the Giants do in 2014 in order to better position themselves for 2015 (and beyond)?
1. Sign Brandon Belt long-term. Belt is already an above-average hitter for a major league first baseman, and his glove is arguably above-average as well. Sign him up before his price gets out of hand.
2. Sign Pablo Sandoval long-term. The guy's in shape. Wrap him up before he too gets too expensive. Put in a weight clause, but sign the guy up.
3. Keep a close eye on left field. Mike Morse provides the Giants a prized commodity: a right-handed power bat. Perhaps we can keep track this season of whether he hits more home runs or gives up more bases with questionable plays in the field. Gregor Blanco makes a slick-fielding complement to Morse, but it is likely the Giants will need to further address the position within the next year.
4. Decide which of the young pitchers to keep and which to use as trade chips. One or two of the young starters will likely crack the rotation in 2015, and there should be plenty left over to patch a position or two of need. Ryan Vogelsong is a potential free agent after next season, and the two Tim's become free agent eligible a year later.
5. Closely evaluate Sergio Romo. Sergio is eligible to become a free agent after the season. The cost of free agent closers is extreme. Incredibly enough, Sergio will be 31 years old before the 2014 season starts. The slider can take a lot out of an arm, and Sergio's peripherals have headed downward since an explosive 2011 season (still remaining at a high level however). Romo will likely be one of their most important decisions in the next 12 months.
