This creates the roster spot for Michael Morse. This move surprises me, because Surkamp was pretty good at Fresno last year. They must think that Edwin Escobar is close to ready to step in if someone gets hurt or is ineffective. Of course Mike Kickham is still around as well. By the way, Escobar has had some control problems this winter, with 12 walks in 17 innings. His control was pretty good in the minors, so this is surprising. I also noticed that Juan Perez is hitting .283 in the Dominican League. Doesn't sound like much, but it's actually eighth best in the league. He's also tied for the league lead in stolen bases with 12.

Evidently Mark Mulder is looking to make a comeback and the Giants took a look, but in the end weren't ready to meet Mulder's price and his demand of a major league contract.

How could a guy who has been out of baseball so long demand a major league deal? He must not have wanted to play for the Giants.

If some team is willing to give him a major league deal, they're certainly not calling his agent, because he'd be signed already. That minor league deal will look pretty good to him in about a month.

I was just thinking about the Giants' DFA-ing Surkamp. If you're going to DFA one player over another, the decision might not have only to do with how much you like the player, but also how likely you think it is he can pass back to you on a minor league contract.
IIRC, Surkamp is a little older, so perhaps his age made the Giants think he was less likely to be taken than a younger player.

The Giants were actually creating that roster spot by selling Pill to Korea, but that's been delayed, so they had to look elsewhere. By the way, the Giants quietly re-signed Sandy Rosario, who they had DFA'd last month after he passed through waivers. I think somebody will take a shot with Surkamp, but he's strictly a Zito type now.

I was thinking about Zito yesterday. Did he retire? I'm surprised he hasn't gotten any offers. Usually lefties can find a job someplace as long as they have a pulse. Heck, if Sanchez can find work...

I think somebody will take a shot with Surkamp, but he's strictly a Zito type now. Rog -- Glad to hear they re-signed Rosario. He likely isn't as good as he looked last season, but he provides nice depth. Surkamp fashioned really nice ERA's (2.93 and 2.78) at San Jose and Fresno last season. Overall, he limited hitters to a .211 average. I would think he would be picked up. The negatives are that he'll be 27 around the All-Star break, and he's had serious surgery. Still, I'd think someone would pick him up -- if they haven't already. Perhaps the Giants are hoping to work a trade. Still, I'd think someone would pick him up -- if they haven't already. Perhaps the Giants are hoping to work a trade. As Mark pointed out, the Giants have Yusmeiro Petit and possibly Edwin Escobar in the wings.
