San Jose could be as bad as or worse than Stockton, but my fiancee doesn't know as much about it. I've never felt at all unsafe in San Jose, but perhaps I should have.

I don't know about Stockton but San Jose, like any large city, has lots of diverse and varied disctricts. Some are more "dangerous" than others. Most are as safe as any small town would be. Municipal stadium, where the SJ Giants play, is not located in one of the more violent areas. It's immediate neighbors are the SJSU track facility, Spartan Stadium, a children's park/petting zoo and the Sharks Ice facility where the Sharks practice and lots of youth hockey teams play.
Having lived in San Jose my whole life it's hard for me to think of it as an overly dangerous city, but there is definitely a criminal gang element. I think most of the violence is gang on gang. In general, it's mostly a matter of knowing which areas to avoid, especially at night.
