Evidently, the Giants are contemplating it if Pablo shows up to spring training in decent shape. Word around the campfire is that he's working out with a personal trainer in Venezuela.

Baggs says that they are seeing what FAs are getting and, knowing they have nothing on the farm to take over at 3rd anywhere near Pablo's talent, they are hoping to extend Pablo at a reasonable rate before he goes off in 2014 and drives up the price.

Works for me. They had recent picture f himon TV, and he looked OK. You could tell he was sucking in his gut though.

I've heard he's actually down to 245. I'd be very happy if he reported at that weight and stayed there the whole season.

For someone under six feet tall, I'm not sure 245 is all that encouraging. I guess it's all relative though.

He's never going to be slim, Allen. I don't want him to be too light, it might affect his power.

Believe me, I'm sure I know more about weight problems and how hard it is to keep it off than everyone else here combined. I feel for the guy, but really, he has access to the best trainers, nutrition, training facilities etc. and has absolutely nothing else to do. Mark is right in that he'll never be slim. But he can do better than he has done. Despite the impression here, I'm rooting for the guy.

Allen -- For someone under six feet tall, I'm not sure 245 is all that encouraging. I guess it's all relative though. Rog -- I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that is an informed comment. There are those who with a weight of 245 would be clearly obese, but with Pablo's body, that likely represents 20% body fat or less. Not spectacular, particularly for an athlete, but certainly not horrible. The same year Pablo reported to camp at 19% body weight (after losing something like 40 pounds over the winter), Jeremy Affeldt also reported at 19%. I don't recall anyone's being worried about Jeremy's weight. Even when Pablo is relatively thin, he looks fat. When he is fat, he looks obese. That's the body type he has.
