The Dickson Baseball Dictionary cites William Henry Nugent's work asserting that it was derived from the fancy, a term from England referring to the fans of a specific hobby or sport from the early 18th Century to the 19th, especially to the followers of boxing.[1] According to that theory, it was originally shortened to fance then just to the homonym fans. Merriam-Webster, the Oxford dictionary and other sources define it as a shortened version of the word fanatic. The word first become popular in reference to baseball enthusiasts. (Fanatic itself, introduced into English around 1550, means "marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion". It comes from the Modern Latin fanaticus, meaning "insanely but divinely inspired".

I guess none of us are fans according to that definition. We've all been critical of the Giants at times.

True...but let someone who is not a fan (Rog) try it and we'll circle the freakin wagons!

Rog is just a different sort. You tend to be the type to grab the pitchfork and torch, Rog would probably be the type to say "wait, let's not do anything crazy without really considering the ramifications."
I agree with you, I hate the Dodgers, but I just can't hate Juan Uribe and Brian Wilson. I'm fairly certain more Giants fans love those guys than Dodgers fans do because they helped us win it all. I would be one of those fans..do you think I'm not a Giants fan just because I still consider those two among my favorite Giants of all time? That 2010 team instantly became my favorite team of all time, because they gave me the one thing no previous team could deliver. If you don't have the same respect for that team who finally gave back to the fans then I have to wonder if you're a fan.

You misunderstand me Boagie. I of course liked and appreciated those guys when they were Giants. But the fact that they could so easily and quickly switch hats and go to the team most Giants fans loathe above all others merely shows their loyalty is to whatever team is paying them at the moment and they have no true love for the Giants, for SF or for Giants fans. As I say it, they don't bleed orange and black, and likely never did.

When Uribe came back to AT&T for the first time after joining the Dodgers he was in tears after receiving his ring and getting congratulated by his ex teammates. There's obviously emotion there for the organization and his time here.
Many thought he was overpaid by the Dodgers, and he probably was. But I think the Giants owed him that type of contract. Uribe may not have been 100% loyal, but the Giants didnt show much loyalty either.

It's a job! They're not going to quit rather than play for a rival of their former team, and they're going to make that move if the money's right. See: Ellsbury, Jacoby.

Umm, Uribe left the Giants because the contract the Dodgers offered him was one million dollars higher than the Giants final offer. (Just 333K per season) Now THAT'S showing no loyalty! Wouldn't even extend the Giants the smallest of hometown discounts. I don't condemn either player, but at least Brian Wilson signed with the Dodgers because he lived in LA, AND the Giants weren't competitive in their offer to retain him.
