After a couple of days of introspective thought on our signing him... I'm still not sure how I feel.
On the one hand, he's JUST the number 5 starter. Was there really anythign better out there?
On the other... WAS/IS there something better?
He's a known commondity, others are not.
Would I want him or Huges? Me? I'll take Vogey.
Hughes had had multiple so-so years.
I want to believe Vogey pitching in the World Baseball nonsense was an issue; that he got into bad habits (it happens, I know. I've been there), then just as he was getting things straightened out, got hurt.
Then again, when he came back, his velocity was down, and things just didn't look right.
So I go back and forth, flip-flopping.
2 solid years, and then a belly flop.
I think I'm leaning more towards likeing the signing.
But heck, tune in tomorrow. I may be on the other side of the fence again.
I guess we'll know better by May-June.

I'm not on the fence at all, I don't like it. I know they wanted Bronson Arroyo, but I'm guessing he never came off his three year demand. I do like it better than Phil Hughes for THREE years, (although Hughes for two I would have preferred) and I like it better than 2 yrs 21 that the A's gave always injured Scott Kazmir. I'm pretty sure the Giants could have gotten Bartolo Colon for one year and I would have preferred him to Vogey, although I know he's a huge risk for a 100 game PED suspension. Hmmm, maybe we're better off with Vogey! The only way I'll wind up liking this signing is if the Giants use the money Sabean says they have and goes for a better left fielder than he had previously said they were looking for. His original plan was to spend big for a fifth starter and go cheaper in LF. Now that he didn't spend a lot on starter number five, he has plenty of cash for an everyday slugger in left.

I with you on your logic here, Mark. It makes sense.
Some very average pitchers want the Jupiter and all of its moons.
Hughes for 3 years is more than just a risk; it's like rolling dice loaded by the house.

To make it clear, I don't think giving Hughes three years is bad for other teams, it's just not good for our team, which has a bevy of arms one or two years away. I don't know the Twins system, it might be very wise of them. By the way, I don't know what Bronson Arroyo is asking for, but considering he was the number one target of both the Twins and Giants when the season ended, and both teams wound up going in other directions, it must be way more than he's worth.

You wonder how much of it is a show for the fans. You would think the Twins would know that Hughes isn't the ultimate answer for them. He actually will probably make little difference in where the Twins finish. They would probably do better developing their kids. But the fans aren't going to stand for them running the same sorry guys out there that they did last season, and they have a ballpark to fill. They have to at least look like their dissatisfied with the status quo, that they're willing to change something.

Yes the Giants seem unwilling to give anyone left on the FA market 3 years because they believe in their farmhands. Colon is not going to settle for 1 year and it's foolish to give a pot-bellied 40 year old druggie more than a single season. I really don't know a lot about Hughes except I always assume that anyone on the Yankees is going to be hyped up more by the media than they deserve to be. Arroyo is looking for Lincecum money so that's what crossed him off the list. In the end the Giants figured a Vogelsong with yet another chip on the shoulder and an incentive laden contract will be the best remaining option.
