The Giants are said to be close to re-signing Ryan Vogelsong. It is estimated Ryan will receive close to $4 million in salary with another $4 million available in performances. Given that the Giants declined Ryan's $6.5 million option (with a $300 K buyout I believe), that seems fair to both parties.
To be honest, I probaby would just as well have re-signed Ryan to the option. But this will leave them on the hook for less if Ryan falters again this season.
The signing should leave the Giants with some money for a starting left fielder, likely coming in trade. For the Giants to get a decent left fielder, one would think the Giants will have to give up some of their young pitching. The seem to have a surfeit, so perhaps anyone aside from Kyle Crick, Edgar Escobar and perhaps Heath Hembree is likely available if the deal is right.
It might be worth looking at rebuilding teams with a proven left fielder and a need to rebuild their starting pitching in the next few years. As I look at some of them though, I see pitching needs but little in the way of good outfielders.
The Giants would seem to have their hands full in the trade market too.
