I heard that Wilson rumor too...it's pretty hard for me to believe they would take that clown back after the scene he made in front of the owner's box after that last Dodger/Giants game at AT&T.

Come back, Brian! All is forgiven! Jason Hammel would be a nice number five starter, but I'm hoping they sign someone better as well.

I was kind of excited about Hammel until I watched him pitch for the O's a few times. He tries too many times to throw high fastballs by home run hitters, and is often unsuccessful. Maybe it would work out better for him at AT&T then it did at Camden Yards, but I think there are better guys out there, such as Hammel's teammate Scott Feldman, or Paul Maholm.

I heard the Yankees had some interest in Wilson, but he made it clear he would not shave his beard, and they have a strict policy against facial hair because they're morons. Although in Wilson's case I can understand why they would want him to cut it, because he looks awful. Supposedly Wilson is looking for a team that will use him as a closer, although he's willing to be an eighth inning guy if they pay him like a closer. Sounds like something the Dodgers would do.

Just curious, why are the Yankees morons because they don't allow facial hair? They allow mustaches don't they? I know they used to. Sparky Lyle comes to mind as does Gossage. The Reds used to have a similar rule. i don't know if they still do.

Because it's 2013 Allen, and we live in a free country. It's a man's right to wear his hair the way he wants to and have a beard if he wants to. They should have no control over this, assuming the player doesn't take advantage of this and looks like a bum. ( and that would be Brian Wilson!)

Not necessarily. We live in a country where the government can and often does keep constant surveillance on you, listen in on your phone conversations and monitor your E-mail. A country where you no longer get to make your own decisions concerning who you do business with, or what products you can buy. The Yankees don't prohibit people from having beards. They just prohibit people who represent their brand from having beards. You don't have to play for the Yankees. If it's that important to you, as it seems to be to Wilson, then don't sign with the Yankees.

Dood - it's funny you mention that. During the playoffs I was watching a Dodgers game with a young relative and he asked me which player was Brian Wilson. I told him the one that looks like a homeless bum...he picked him out pretty quickly.

If you want to have a beard, sign with Boston. As for Big Stein, (and the current owners, for that matter) it's their business. Why can't they run it the way they want to? Isn't it a free country?

They surely have that right, but if player A is better than player B and they sign player B because he doesn't have a beard and player A does, don't you think they're being stupid?

It seems to have worked out pretty well for them so far. They've made the postseason 17 out of the last 19 years. They want to project a certain image. It's their business, their right. Wilson's the first guy I've heard of who didn't want to shave. Remember Johnny Damon, who looked like a caveman in Boston, but shaved for the Yankees? When you're talking about a multi-million dollar job, I would think shaving wouldn't be much of an issue.

The Yankees always overpaid for talent, which is why the players were willing to do things they really didn't want to do. Now that they're worried about the luxury tax it's a different story. They may have made it 17 of their last 19, but last year was the first time they closed their wallets and they didn't make it.

How many rings do they have compared to the other teams? So what you're saying is that players are willing to sell out their principles concerning facial hair as long as you throw them some more money. Reminds me of when Marge Schott owned the Reds. All the black players were apalled that she was a racist, but had no problem taking her money.

Wow, has this thread gone off on a tangent! To get it back on the right track, the Giants are supposedly interested in Ellsbury and Choo, but I don't see them meeting those high prices. And they're supposedly listening on Panda trade offers.

As much as I'd like to see either in a Giants uniform... I just don't see it happening.
But I can't help but wonder if the Giants haven't gotten tired of Pablo, his injuries, and his continual weight issues.
And again, I can't help but wonder if they'd put him in a deal with the 'right' players coming back.
Then again, what a huge public relations fiasco.
He puts fannies into seats, not to mention the money they make on Panda paraphanalia.

If there's a deal to be made that will help the team, then by all means they should make it. That goes for any player. I don't think attendance will suffer much if Pablo moves on, as long as the team remains successful.

It would probably depend on what you got in return. I'm sure if it was a big name the fans would accept it pretty quickly. I don't see him being dealt though. When you deal a player of his caliber it's usually because you have someone in the system ready to take his place. They have nobody.

Absolutely true! Thing is, one never knows what Sabean is going to do. Talk about playing it close to the vest!
As I said when I started this thread, I was just wondering...
Actually, I'm getting a little antsy for us to make a significant move or three.
I'm not good at waiting.

I don't believe for a second Pablo will be traded. If you trade a player that talented and that popular you'd better win and right away, otherwise, you will definitely see the fan base disgruntle in a hurry. The Giants themselves have made no indication they are interested in trading Pablo. The rumors come from media outside of Bay Area. The local writers keep maintaining that Pablo is staying.

Also, former Giant Bill Mueller was recently hired as the Cubs hitting coach.

It's going to be interesting to see if Wilson's arm will hold up as a full time closer, but I certainly agree that Detroit needs one badly.

Here's one. According to Jon Morosi the Giants we're looking to sign Omar Infante and put him in left field for 2014, and then move him to third base (?!). Perhaps the Pablo externsion talk is premature.

Allen -- Here's one. According to Jon Morosi the Giants we're looking to sign Omar Infante and put him in left field for 2014, and then move him to third base (?!). Perhaps the Pablo externsion talk is premature. Rog -- You could be right here. I do think though that this interpretation may be at least as good. It may be that the Giants were thinking of signing Infante for left field this season and using him as insurance for third base in case they didn't re-sign Pablo. Had the Giants signed Infante for this season and beyond, he could have provided insurance for Marco Scutaro as well. With their other two outfielders already signed for the next three (Pagan) and five (Pence) years, I doubt the Giants wanted to commit four years to the 32-year-old Infante. The Giants have those two plus Posey signed up long-term, and I suspect they have already stated or likely are strongly considering doing the same with Belt, Sandoval and Crawford. The Giants truly are trying to build from within, and they're doing a nice job of it. If we look at the Giants' projected starting lineup for next season, all but Morse are either players the Giants developed or in the case of Marco Scutaro, a player acquired by trading a player they developed (the forgettable Charlie Culberson). The rotation has Cain, Lincecum and Bumgarner. They haven't fared as well in devloping their bullpen from within, but they have Romo and Hembree. Until he joined the Beach Boys, the Giants had Brian Wilson. Hector Sanchez is another fairly important player the Giants developed themselves, and they have made it clear they are relying on a handful of young pitchers and hope a few young position players help out, as well. In fact, this raises a question as to which players developed in the system might be important parts of the 2016 team. Among the starting pitchers, the Giants are clearly counting on Kyle Crick and Edwin Encarnacion. Hembree and Derek Law are expected to help the bullpen. There is another small handful of pitchers who should be on the big league roster, at Fresno, or possibly traded for another piece or two to the puzzle. An added handful of position players could be at least backups. If Posey were moved to another position, it seems very possible both Sanchez and Susac could be behind the plate. The Giants seem high on outfielder Mac Williamson, and both Gary Brown and Joe Panik have been top-rated prospects in the past. One would expect all the players previously mentioned originally to be back with the possible exception of Lincecum, whose contract runs out before the 2016 season. Almost certainly trade and/or injury will alter the above, but it appears the Giants of 2016 could be a fairly homegrown team.
