In recent years, Carlos Beltran excepted, the players Sabean has gone out and either acquired or signed have all had more or less one thing in common;
They were team focused, not self focused.
Pence, Scutaro, Lopez, Rameriz, Affledt, Rowand, just to name a few.
It is my opinion that he realized he'd never have the budge to get the "big names," and thus had to find a way to maximize what he had.
One way to do that is to get guys focused on the team, and not self, but who are also good players.
And he's done that.
Therefore, I think it's reasonable to assume whomever he signs/trades for in the offseason will be that kind of a player.
We'll see.

Rog -- Overall, Brian has done a fine job of acquiring talent for the Giants -- mostly via trades and bargain basement pickups. He has quite a challenge this winter. Sabean has done a nice job of adding supporting cast players. But his success comes with drafting and developing players.

I'm not just specifying his tenure with the Giants. As a scout for the Yankees he scouted and drafted Rivera, Jeter, Pettite, and Posada.

I would imagine Brian has little if anything to do with developing players.

I believe Sabes has always said he tries to get good team people who also can play. But you are right, he knows most big name FA hitters won't even consider coming to SF in their primes...and why would they? There's only a finite number of years they have to make their money and I don't write it off as a character flaw that they would try to maximize their salaries. So he's left with trying to catch lightning in a bottle with a bunch of fire-pissers who will take a bullet--figuritively--for the team, with some homegrown talent thrown in.
