Anybody here ever watched ESPN? Ever read ESPN the magazine?
I have been surprised at how deeply that publication has gotten into stats. They absolutely put me to shame, with stats that go far beyond anything I have access to.
So, remember when we were talking about the luck involved in winning it all? They did an article on that -- sort of.
The artical is entitled "The Tigers Will Win It All," and the writer than adds, "Actually, I'm joking, sort of."
The article posits that with the available information through September 9th, the Tigers indeed have a 19.4% chance of winning the World Series. He has the Braves next at 17.4%. He lists the Dodgers as having a 14.3% change, or one out of seven.
I won't go into details, but he did quote Billy Beane as saying the goal was to get into the playoffs, that from there it was f---ing luck.
Brian Sabean has said that the postseason is a crap shoot (although I haven't heard him say that since the Giants won in 2010).
I have mentioned luck as a factor in the postseason. One poster said I posted it was ALL luck, which I didn't.
But ESPN seems to think, as I do, that luck is indeed involved.
