Striking out three times in a game gets you a Silver Sombrero
Striking out four times earns you a Golden Sombrero.
So with that in mind, what do you get when you (one player) commits four screw ups in a single game?
If they gave such awards, the first winner I could think of would win a Silver Fedora; 3 screw ups in a game. That award would go to...
Willie Davis, for his 3 errors in one inning vs Baltimore in the 1966 World Series.
The second Silver Fedora would go to Bob Brenly for his 3 errors at 3B in the 1980's. (Can't remember the year)
But the Golden Fedora...The Golden Fedora... now that is something else! To win one of these suckers, you have to do something special!
And since I created it, (made it up), I get to select the first recipient!
And the winner is...
Kensuke Tanaka!
Way to go, Kensuke!
You played an above average flyball in the LCF gap into a triple...
And then played an above average line drive into a double!
Wow! Now that's special!
But to be fair, you really are a secondbaseman playing in the outfield....
Um... no. Catching THAT flyball should have been no different, even easier than racing behind first base towards the wall, and grabing a foul ball.
And if that wasn't enough, # 3, he couldn't even deliver a flyball to the outfield, but instead, hit a groundball to SS...
and then, when the secondbasemen threw it away, he confounded the already-in-his-pocket Silver Fedora with the move that earned him the Golden Fedora;
#4 down by 3 runs, he foolishly tried to take 2B after the over throw, only to be cut down by 6 feet.
Yes!
Way to go, Kensuke!
For a veteran player with your years as a professional, that's quite a feat.
Can't you smell my sarcasm?
I admit, I was a hard coach to play for.
If I was a pro coach, I would be even harder.
You are supposed to be a professional, and as such, there are certain expectations I have of you.
You're going to make mistakes. I get that, and I can live with that.
One a game... maybe two... once in a while.
But they had better not happen 3... 4 times in a game.
I expect smarter play than that.
That's the kind of stuff I expect from someone like Brandon Belt, whom I love, but don't think he's the quickest cow on the dairy farm.
The Golden Fedora...
Swell.
And here I didn't think it could get worse than Andres Torres multiple miscues in one game.
Way to go, boly!
