Giants relievers each got four days off for the All-Star break. It appears likely they will need it.
The Giants have used 12 relievers in their first two games back from the break, and one of the eight on their roster is injured. No word yet on how long Jeremy Affeldt will be out, but he was forced out of last night's game with a leg strain.
Despite using five of their relievers in both games since the break, the bullpen looks OK for today. Five members of the pen have thrown 14 or fewer pitching in the two games, and with 23 throws, Sergio Romo might be available for a batter or two today. Affeldt is injured, and Santiago Casilla has thrown 32 pitches.
The Giants' most reliable starter, Madison Bumgarner goes today. A blowout win for the Giants would be best, since Casilla and Romo have thrown the most pitches. Either way, it is important Mad Bum go deep into the game so the Giants have relievers available on Monday.
Things will get even worse on Tuesday, with the Giants playing a double header. Someone might be called up to replace Affeldt, but the Giants also need an extra starter that day. Wednesday will probably also be tough.
The Giants then get a much-needed day off next Thursday, and another a week from Monday.
Bruce Bochy has been masterful in utilizing his bullpen in recent years. The next four days may challenge his talents more than ever before.
