Pablo Sandoval is 4 for 6 with two homers in his two San Jose rehab games. Looks ready.
Batting 5th when he returns?

I'd like him back in the third spot, with Buster fourth and Pence fifth. He'll be back Monday I believe. I'm guessing Noonan goes back down.

I'd rather they send Abreu down.
Time and time again we've all watched him screw up plays in the field.
All Noonan does is get the job done, first at 2B, and now, at 3B.
But likely you're right because Tony hits (or rather, career wise numbers say) can't hit from either side.

Mark -- I'm guessing Noonan goes back down.
Rog -- Virtually certain I would think. Over the winter the Giants envisioned Joaquin Arias and Tony Abreu as their utility infielders, and now Tony is healthy. If Torres is significantly hurt, one would think Francisco Peguero would reappear.
I've got to think that Guillermo Quiroz's time with the Giants is nearing an end, as well. Even if Torres is healthy, the Giants could use a fifth outfielder. Quiroz's primary purpose seems to be to make it easier for the Giants to pinch hit Hector Sanchez.

But likely you're right because Tony hits (or rather, career wise numbers say) can't hit from either side. Rog -- Nick has been quite solid in the field, but after his wonderful 7 for 13 start to the season, he hasn't hit a lick (11 for 70). The good news though is that he's not 6 for his last 22. It may be too that the Giants would risk losing Abreu if they sent him back. Second baseman Kensuke Tanaka has me intrigued a bit. He's hitting .327 for Fresno, with 27 walks and just 22 strikeouts. He also has 19 steals in 25 attempts. His limitations are that he bats left (putting him in direct competition with Noonan), pretty much plays only second base, and has no power (16 total bases on 73 hits). I thought Tanaka would be the backup infielder who would make it out of spring training, but he didn't hit much and had a very hard time playing shortstop. The Fresno players have generally acquitted themselves fairly well at the major league level, but right now they hare having to play too big a role. I just noticed Noonan's OPS is just .502. That's far worse than Manny Burriss used to hit. A former #32 overall pick, Nick made an amazing spring comeback (literally) to earn a roster spot, but since that fine start, he's been overmatched at the plate. As noted, better recently though. And solid with the leather. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1849&page=1#ixzz2X3pV5XE3

The good news though is that he's not 6 for his last 22. dk...if he isn't 6 for 22 what is he??? It may be too that the Giants would risk losing Abreu if they sent him back. dk..Is that really a loss? Second baseman Kensuke Tanaka has me intrigued a bit. His limitations are that he bats left (putting him in direct competition with Noonan), pretty much plays only second base, and has no power (16 total bases on 73 hits). dk..pretty much plays only 2b??? He was a SS in Japan, started out as a 2B in Fresno and has now been playing LF.... I thought Tanaka would be the backup infielder who would make it out of spring training, but he didn't hit much and had a very hard time playing shortstop. dk..they have just moved up Ydwin Villegas from SJ to Fresno and he is playing SS...and Cole Gillespie is playing 2B...;Pill played some 3B, but is back at 1B...Villegas, long time non-prospect for Giants earned his promotion by hitting .189 with 23 K's to 1 walk....about normal for him....where is the Panik? The Fresno players have generally acquitted themselves fairly well at the major league level, but right now they hare having to play too big a role. I just noticed Noonan's OPS is just .502. And solid with the leather. dk...good start and then pitchers adhusted...however, the g uy may have made the adhustment back...why do emphasize his bad spell and minimize his good runs....the guy is showing above average skills with the glove...and not really overmatched at bat...I had the feeling that if that ball he hooked around the foul pole had stayed fair, he would have been someone to need to play....

Did you see the film of Pablo at SJ? He's huge. He looks like John Goodman in the movie "The Babe". I thought he was supposed to lose weight while he was on the DL.

Rog, this is where the numbers are soooo misleading.
Before he was sent down... he had a number of balls that he hit well... but found leather.
A couple of those balls fall in, and we're looking at different numbers.
He squares up the ball a lot, and we've all seen his ability to go the other way.
And twice he hit balls that were darned close to be HRs...
Something Abreu cannot say.

I agee, Allen. He DID look like Goodman in the movie.
Thing is, befoe they showed the clip, the comment was it looked like he HAD lost weight.
Yeah. Right.
Where'd he lose it from? His feet?

Boly -- Rog, this is where the numbers are soooo misleading. Before he was sent down... he had a number of balls that he hit well... but found leather. A couple of those balls fall in, and we're looking at different numbers. Rog -- You make a good point. Nick had a 24.6% line drive rate, which is quite good. That is why a small sample can be misleading. That said, Nick would have needed quite a bit more luck. Had that home run ball stayed fair, the double off the top of the wall gone over, and a couple more singles fallen in, he still would have only a .618 OPS. That wouldn't be a horrible number, but it wouldn't be particularly good, either -- especially for adding in a good measure of good luck. Too early to tell for sure, but Nick may well be one of those Four A players who bounce up and down. I do give him credit for learning third base well. Two points to look at with Nick's going down: First, with the return of both Pablo and Marco, the utility guys won't be starting very often as they did with that duo out. Any issues Abreu has with the glove will be minimized. Second, getting to hit every day will likely be a plus for Nick's development.
