Here are two quotes from two Nationals players after last night's loss.
Bryce Harper- "I put that whole loss on me," Harper said. "Really sucks."
Rafael Soriano- "I made a bad pitch to him, but that doesn't mean I lost the game there," Soriano said. "I feel like we can play a better game than we're playing right now."
While I don't think Harper is at fault, that would have been a tough catch to make, he's not pointing blame at others.
Soriano on the other hand is saying he didn't lose the game, he just made a bad pitch.. Which tells me he's pointing blame at Harper for not catching it, and the other pitcher for giving up the homerun to Sandoval.
Rog and I had a discussion during spring training about who should be considered the best team in the NL going into the season. He said the Nationals, I said the Giants.
Soriano's quote is why the Nationals have a ways to go before being the best, and likely won't be the best until Soriano is gone. That is an inexcusable attitude to have after you blow a save. Soriano didn't get the loss in the box score, but he did lose that game, and he should take blame, or at very least not point blame towards others. That's a piss poor attitude and that's why the Giants are a better team.
Romo or Wilson would NEVER have pointed blame at others. No pitcher on our staff would do that.
Harper's attitude after the game is why the Nationals might have a chance to win in the future. That's the attitude to have after losing. Blame yourself, and focus on becoming better.
Harper learned from that game, Soriano learned nothing.
If I were Davey Johnson, Soriano is no longer my closer.
