Last season Buster Posey hit .394 on the fly balls he hit. His teammates hit .202.
This isn't a typo. Buster hit nearly TWICE as much on fly balls as his teammates.
Now, Buster is a good fly ball hitter. His average before last season was .284 on fly balls, which is good. But the .394 he hit in 2012 is obscene, which likely means it is unmaintainable.
Yes, Buster hit a little better on ground balls and line drives last season, but he hit .417 compared to .393 in other seasons. Only a fourth a much improvement as on fly balls.
Buster actually struck out just a little more last season, whiffing 18.1% of the time, compared to 15.5% previously.
So when Buster did anything last season except hit a fly ball, he was pretty much the same hitter as he had been previously. But he went from a very good fly ball hitter to an unbelievable one.
Unless he can repeat that in 2012, it is unlikely he will hit .336. And he might not come close.
In 2012 Buster hit about average on ground balls and on line drives. But on fly balls he was killer.
It seems unlikely as many flies will fall in this year. Or that Buster will again hit .336.
