I find it surprising that you think Belt could turn into an above-average left fielder, Don, while you don't seem to think Buster Posey catches at that level.
Personally I think Buster has FAR more potential as a catcher than Brandon has as a left fielder. I realize you don't agree with it, but Buster was ranked as the #5 defensive catcher in Bill James' Annual. I would be surprised if Brandon could rank that high as a left fielder. I would see Brandon's potential in left as perhaps making the top 10.
dk..once more you are reading only part of what James said....he was ranked 5th only because of 3 voters and the fact that the votes were spread over 30 guys...in the 2 strictly fielding ratings he was 16th and unlisted with only 9 top (5 tied for 10th, but un-named) ...not too good in my opinion....
MAYBE Brandon could become as good an outfielder as Cole Gillespie, but he wouldn't come close to the Giants' first four outfielders or Francisco Peguero. Or Gary Brown.
dk...I have more respect for him than you do...he can run and throw...he has great ability as a first baseman...his second position, as he started as an outfielder
At his best he MIGHT become as good as Hunter Pence, but I think even that is a stretch.
This wasn't your idea, but as for the idea of playing Blanco/Torres in center, Pagan in right and Pence in left, I like all but the arrangement of the two corners. Pence has played his entire career in right field, and overall he's played it at an average level at the very least.
dk..he only played part of one year in the Phone Booth's right field....I bet he would grab at a chance to move.....if they keep Belt on first and Pablo at third...
Play Pagan in left field in that scenario.
