Whiteside got waived again. Too bad all this hasn't happened during the season, he would have enough bonus miles to fly to Mars.....
SF to home, back to SF, on to NY, up to Toronto, back across the border to Texas.....
All this would have been saved if the Giants could have convinced him to sign a minor league contract...

Rog -- One could make an ironic argument that Eli has been the most popular player in the majors this off-season. As for the claims by the Yankees, Blue Jays and Rangers being saved had the Giants convinced Eli to sign a free agent contract, I think the Giants waived Eli in the first place in order to set things up for him to (possibly) sign a minor league contract. I believe each of the three teams that has now lost Eli on waivers was simply trying to keep control of him while sending him to the minors. The strange thing is that both Toronto and Texas claimed Eli after having passed on him less than a month before. I think Whiteside sees two young catchers on the Major League roster and a top prospect in Andrew Susac and decided, "eh, no thanks" on the minor league deal.

The Giants originally signed with the Giants with a major league contract...if they signed him to a minor league contract, they would have avoided the waiver wire......they did make some "lunch" money when they lost him on waivers....

Rog -- I don't think the Giants signed Eli at all this winter. I think they were trying to waive him so they COULD sign him to a minor league contract. He wasn't a free agent, but rather an arbitriation-eligible player I do believe. The only contract I know that Eli has signed this winter is the $625K/$200K split contract he signed with the Yankees.
