Don -- your favorite fielding nerds didn't rate Buster too high with the mitt....
Rog -- Really? The fielding ratings Bill James referenced this year had Buster ranked as #5 behind the dish. No other Giant was ranked as high, and the only other player ranked in the top 10 was Brandon Crawford as the #9 shortstop.
We want facts instead of mistakes, Don. Thanks.
dk...he was rated 5th because of his all around ability, he wasn't in the top 10 as a fielder.....lets both reread what was said....
Rog -- I re-read James' annual, and I would refer you to pages 22 and 24, which make it crystal clear that the rankings are for fielding. Three things should have given you a clue.
. The headline on page 22 which stated "2012 FIELDING Bible Awards."
. The introducion that stated "Below are the final tallies for the 2012 Fielding Bible Awards.
. Common sense. If there were an OVERALL ranking of today's catchers, do you honestly think Buster would have ranked only 5th? We're talking about the NL MVP, an award catchers seldom win. In fact, Buster was the first NL catcher to win the award in 40 years (Johnny Bench). Often it pays to think before one writes.
Another common sense item. Do you honestly think Brandon Crawford was the 9th-best ALL-AROUND shortstop? I mentioned that he was the only other Giant in the top 10.
Don't you think Pablo Sandoval would have made the top 10 among third basemen? Perhaps Matt Cain among pitchers and Angel Pagan among center fielders? Despite his down season, perhaps Hunter Pence in right field?
By the way, Don, you may disagree with my opinions, but you won't often find me wrong on the facts. Sometimes, but not often.
