The Giants are said to be redoubling their efforts to re-sign Marco Scutaro. The Cardinals and Yankees are said to be competing.
Meanwhile, Scott Hairston has said it is likely he will remain with the Mets.
The level of left fielder the Giants will pursue is said to be impacted by how much they wind up paying Scutaro.
The Giants are said to have interest in free agent right-handed reliever Mark Lowe. The 29-year-old has a career 3.94 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Those figures were 3.43 and 1.22 last season.
Perhaps the Giants are viewing Lowe as a replacement for Guillermo Mota, although Lowe received $1.7 million last season and would seem to be due for a nice raise. Mota's 2012 salary was $1.0 million.
George Kontos will pitch this season for little over the minimum, while his fellow relievers will see their salaries increase through arbitration. Santiago Casilla's projected $5.4 million is the highest in the bullpen (aside from the recently re-signed Jeremy Affeldt), and the Giants are said to be working on a long-term contract for him. (I would guess that would be two or three years.)
One would think they would be looking to lock up Sergie Romo, as well. Sergio won't be eligible for free agency for two years though, so perhaps the Giants will wait another year to do so.
Javier Lopez is under contract for the 2013 season, and the other relievers are advancing through arbitration eligibility.
If the Giants were to work out a deal with Brian Wilson, he would be eligible to become a free agent after next season -- unless they signed him for one year with an option year (or longer).
