Buster Olney tweets that the Giants are short on annual value in their offer of a 4-year contract to Angel Pagan. He also says if the Giants are unable to re-sign Pagan, they are interested in Shane Victorino.
If the Phils should win out on Pagan and the Giants sign Victorino, it would complete a weird exchange of outfielders between the two teams.
Last summer the Phils traded the Giants Hunter Pence for a package that included Nate Schierholtz. A Phillies/Pagan, Giants/Victorino free agent result would also "trade" Victorino for Pagan (even though the actual Phillies trade of Shane was to the Dodgers).
It seems very unlikely to happen, but with Nate now a free agent, should the Giants sign him back, that would put the icing on an unusual outfield cake.
Especially if the Phils also signed free agent Cody Ross.

Nate was unhappy here, Bochy was unhappy with his comments in the press, and Nate supposedly has nine teams interested in him, so the chances of him being in the Giants OF next year are about the same as Barry Bonds'. I could see Nate starting for a team like the Mets. In another interesting twist, the Giants are now talking to Michael Bourn as well. He was asking for a ridiculous price, but perhaps Boras' demands have come down, as he sees three center fielders out there, with only two teams to choose from. Maybe the Giants will give Bourn an ultimatum! ...waits for laughter, doesn't get it.

Mark -- Maybe the Giants will give Bourn an ultimatum! ...waits for laughter, doesn't get it. Rog -- I thought it was funny enough to have supremacy. Mine is a big stretch, but yours was pretty darn good. Although I know the Giants and Phillies are mentioned most when it comes to Pagan, aren't there several more teams out there who need a center fielder? I did read that the Braves might even be interested in having Pagan play left field. Braves gave a huge contract to BJ Upton. I don't see them as players for Angel Pagan, who's a decent hitter for a center fielder, but not for a corner outfielder.

Rog -- I agree with you, but the rumor is (or at least was) out there. The lastest on the Pagan/Phillies/Giants situation is that they are the top contenders for Angel, both with Cody Ross as a Plan B. That would make it seem that the Giants are planning on Gregor Blanco as a starter, at least on a platoon basis. I think the signing of Pagan at the numbers being thrown around is iffy, and that signing Ross at his asking price of 3/$25 would be folly. The Giants would seem to need TWO starting outfielders, but Blanco may be allowing them to look for only one (or at least be willing to settle for that). Blanco can play EITHER left or center, so he would complement either Pagan OR Ross. I would prefer two starting outfielders, with Blanco as the 4th outfielder. My next choice would be one new starting outfielder, with Blanco in a platoon with a right-handed hitter. I'm hoping we don't have to settle for Gregor as a full-time starter, although he's one of my favorite Giants. Looking back though, who would have thought ten months ago when we first discussed Blanco (and most of us didn't even know he was on the Giants), that Gregor would be even a viable candidate for a starting spot? I like Gregor primarily as a 4th outfielder, but he is a nice piece to have, isn't he?
