The Giants missed out on what might have been a good center field prospect when the Nationals traded for Twins center fielder Denard Span.
Span is a good on-base guy (.357) who steals bases (90 out of 118 over his career), and is a good fielder.
The Nationals traded a very good pitching prospect, Alex Meyer, for the 28-year-old center fielder.
Myer is a nice prospect, but it would seem the Giants might have been able to put together a deal for Span, solving their center field situation.
Perhaps this means the Giants are confident in re-signing Angel Pagan.

I wouldn't give up a top prospect for Span. He's a decent player, but he's simply not a good hitter. I'd even prefer Shane Victorino over Span. Shane is actually the same age as Pagan, and is young enough to bounce back from a poor season.

Rog -- Span is under team control for 2/$11.75 or 3/$20.25, although he's an aging speedster, and their history isn't good. That is good cost certainty though. And the Nationals have the best young players in the game, making it easier for them to trade prospects. I'm going to take another look at Victorino, if you think he'll be less expensive than Pagan. You are right that at the very least Shane should save a year of commitment. Prior to a bad 2013 season, Shane was pretty doggone good. I think I might actually prefer Victorino over Pagan. He is only 32, and he's coming off his worst season... That should provide him with huge motivation to improve.
My only question is this: Two of his last 3 seasons have not been very good: 2010 .259, and then last year's DISMALL .255.
Why? Why the huge fall off from so many productive years in Philthydelpia?
He's a better defender than Pagan, I think he might be faster, and, other than last year, and 2010, he had a better OBP.
I have trouble believing he's done.
A nagging injury no one knows about?
