After claiming him from the Astros just 10 days ago, the Yankees today outrighted right-handed reliever Mickey Storey. Story is 26, could make a great Righty One Out GuY (ROOGY), and actually pitched better against lefty hitters at the major league level.
He strikes out more than a batter per inning and had a 3.8 K/BB ratio in the minors and 3.4/1 ratio in 30.1 major league ininngs.
I'm not sure why Houston and the Yankees let him go, but then I didn't know why the Royals waived Jose Mijares and no team picking ahead of the Giants claimed him.
Mijares as an early-game LOOGY and Storey as an early-game ROOGY would seem a good combination to me. Storey has only a 90 mph fastball, but a very good slider.
Call him a poor man's Sergio Romo. But call him to the Giants' roster -- especially since I'm guessing the Giants will non-tender both Brian Wilson and Santiago Casilla, if they haven't already done so.

Wilson yes, Casilla no. In fact they're working on a multi year extension with Casilla. They also tendered Mijares as well. Bullpen seems pretty set, plus you have Heath Hembree possibly ready to make the next step. Affeldt, Lopez, Mijares from the left side, Romo, Casilla, Kontos, and Hembree from the right side. I'm pretty happy with that group.

Mark -- Wilson yes, Casilla no.
Rog -- You're absolutely right about this, and I myself should have been more on top of it. The Giants had to tender Santiago in order to even be able to trade him. It sounds, though, like they're planning to keep him.
I guess they're transferring some of Wilson's money to Santiago. He's the only Giants reliever who likely to make over $5 million per season, unless the Giants go long-term with Romo.

Still can't figure out why Storey is available. He's cheap and under team control for six more years. It will be at least two years before he will be eligible for arbitration.
Maybe I'm missing something -- although I don't believe I was with Mijares, who was non-tendered a year ago and then waived in August.

I agree, Mark. From what I've been reading, the chances of Wilson returning to form AFTER a second operation like that, is 60% Down from 90% chance after the first TJ.
Thus, he being non tendered, doesn't upset me.
He still thinks he deserves big bucks, and not a 'wait and see' type of contract.
I'm with Sabean on this one.
IF he comes back at 100%, great! But the odds are only marginally in his favor.
Hard not to like our bullpen after last year, especially in the post season.

Agree. I'd be all over this one, too.
Then again, Sabean has said he's virtually doing nothing until the Scutaro/Pagan situation plays out. Right now, that's more important than Storey, whom I'd Love to have on the team!

Boly -- Then again, Sabean has said he's virtually doing nothing until the Scutaro/Pagan situation plays out. Right now, that's more important than Storey, whom I'd Love to have on the team! Rog -- The thing about Storey is that after being designated for assignment, he may be available for nothing. But the Giants already passed him up once. They could have claimed him before the Yankees did. So here's the thing. The Yankees had the best record of any AL team. That means most teams already passed up a waived player before the Yankees claimed him. So the Yankees can designate players for assignment with little risk of losing them. They did the same thing with Eli Whiteside. GM's are certainly getting smarter, aren't they? So the question remains: Why did the Giants not claim Storey? He could potentially have been their fourth righty out of the pen, and the Giants have plenty of room on their 40-man roster. Usually I figure there are reasons why things happen or don't happen -- and that's likely the case here. But when the Giants landed Jose Mijares from waivers last summer, we wondered much the same thing. It makes sense for the Giants to have their primary concentration on Pagan and Scutaro. But they have plenty of people to keep their eyes open for a guy like Storey, as well.
