Sixteen games. That's how many times Jeremy Affeldt has left games with the Giants in worse position run-wise than when he entered.
That's not very good. Far worse than his 2.83 ERA would indicate. Worse than his 1.29 WHIP.
Seems odd to give a guy with a 2.83 ERA a D+, but Jeremy has done it the old fashioned way: he's earned it.

Actually, I would have given him a C-
That's before I read the numbers you've found.
D+
Good call.

Sorry, D+ seems harsh for a relief pitcher with an ERA under 3.00. I'll assume your numbers are correct, which would move him from a B to a C. Affeldt has only given up 1 homerun, he has a good strikeout to walk ratio and he probably been asked to cleanup alot of messes, more so than the others.

Boagie -- Sorry, D+ seems harsh for a relief pitcher with an ERA under 3.00. I'll assume your numbers are correct, which would move him from a B to a C. Affeldt has only given up 1 homerun, he has a good strikeout to walk ratio and he probably been asked to cleanup alot of messes, more so than the others. Rog -- I understand your point, and I did consider a C-. But in 20 of his 63 outings, Jeremy gave up a run and/or allowed inherited runners to score. By comparison, Sergio Romo did so in only 11 of his 66 outings. Jeremy has allowed 12 of his 38 inherited runners to score. Sergio has allowed only 3 out of 19. Once again, Jeremy allowed twice as many. In other words, Jeremy has worsened the Giants' situation nearly twice as often as Sergio. ERA isn't always a good evaluator of relievers. Do you have a good feeling when Jeremy enters a game -- or are you a little queasy? Just a little? I have faith when Affeldt comes in the game, I'm not queasy at all. I'd give him a C. The only others in the bullpen I have more faith in are Romo. Casilla (barely) and Lopez against lefties.

Rog -- I have stood up for Jeremy in other posts here, but I actually have more faith in Mijares. My "faith" order would be Romo, Lopez, Casilla, Mijares, Affeldt, Mota. Jeremy has pitched better of late, allowing runs in only one of his last nine appearances. Right now my faith in him is pretty high. But overall, not so much. He has simply allowed too many inherited runners to score. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1011&page=1#6483#ixzz27c0zCGlV
