Madison Bumgarner nearly pitched 500 innings before he turned 23. Instead, he reached that benchmark 23 days after his birthday.
He had had inconsistencies of late, yet his ERA still stands at only 3.26 on the season. His record is 15-10. He has pitched the first two complete games of his career.
Despite the recent inconsistency, his season ERA is 3.26, and his ERA over the past 365 days is 3.26, which in itself shows overall consistency.
The two reasons he isn't graded higher is the recent inconsistency and his home park being a pitchers' park.
Here is what Bumgarner has accomplished in the last three years:
. A career ERA of 3.16.
. A declining WHIP which has come down from a respectable 1.31 in his rookie season to 1.21 last season and to just 1.11 this year.
For a guy just turned 23, he has accomplished a lot. This season he has been very good. A 4.21 road ERA reduces his grade to B+.
