Here are the September numbers of appearances and innings for the key relievers through tonight's game (September 17th).
Romo -- 10, 9.1
Casilla -- 10, 9.0
Lopez -- 8, 3.2
Affeldt -- 9, 6.0
Mijares -- 9, 4.0
Mota -- 9, 5.0
Kontos -- 5, 2.1
I would imagine those are the relievers on the postseason roster, and with the exception of Kontos, they have been heavily worked. Notice though that except for Romo and Casilla, the inning totals aren't high.
If the Giants weren't going to be able to rest these guys going into the playoffs, I would be very concerned. But with time to rest these guys the last week or so of the season and a couple more days prior to the playoffs, my concern is minimized a bit.
One thing we may learn is whether appearances or innings are more wearing on a reliever's arm.
The extra days off in the postseason will help the pen, and if they are getting too overworked, Bochy can always go from using six pitchers for the last three innings to using three or four.
In addition they could get rest from blowouts and from long outings by one or more starters.
This adds another area of excitement to the Giants' postseason. Can the bullpen hold up in this elaborate closer-by-committee system? I think it will be another nice test of Bochy's managing.
