Matt Cain pretty much clinched an All-Star spot last night. Could it also have propelled him to being the All-Star game STARTER? Based on the Giants' present rotation, Matt's normal day to start would come one day after the game, which shouldn't be much of an impediment.
Cain and Cabrera appear to be locks now. Buster Posey could win the voting for the catching spot.
Santiago Casilla, Ryan Vogelsong and Sergio Romo each would seem to have a chance. Madison Bumgarner, Pablo Sandoval nor even Angel Pagan would seem out of place.
Could be an exciting All-Star game from a Giants prospective.

Allen- I would imagine Matt had a spot clinched before last night. As for him being the starter, who else?

Allen- I would imagine Matt had a spot clinched before last night. As for him being the starter, who else? Rog -- Matt was certainly in strong position prior to last night, although he also had strong competition within his own team from Ryan Vogelsong and to a lesser extent, Madison Bumgarner. My point is that now almost WHAT he does between now and the All-Star game, Matt will be on the team. As for whom else to start the game, Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez or Clayton Kershaw would be legitimate choices. Cain has the most experience of the four. Until last night, one could have made the argument that Matt hadn't even been the best starter on his TEAM. Ryan Vogelsong has also been amazingly good. I had no difficulty predicting Mad Bum would be this good this season, but both Matt and Ryan have certainly exceeded my expectations. I don't see Kershaw. He's good, but the others have more wins and a lower ERA. Cain (right now) has the lowesst ERA of the group, and the perfect game as well. I'd have to go with Matt. Looks like one heck of a pitching staff for the NL, doesn't it?

As of right now, Matt looks like the logical choice to start the All-Star game. Tim has already done so, and it would appear Mad Bum has a good chance to do so in the future. Matt's ERA is a major league leading 0.85. Matt's .196 average against appears to be second only to Gio Gonzalez's .168 (!) in the NL. Gonzalez has also limited opposing hitters to just one home run, compared to Matt's 7. Gio has 30 walks to only 16 by Matt. (By the way, Matt's 1.7 BB/9 is in Greg Maddux territory. Madison Bumgarner has walked only 18 himself.) Gonzalez wouldn't be a horrible choice to start the game. If his arm stays healthy, think fellow National Stephen Strasburg might start an All-Star game or two?

Matt's ERA is 2.18. His WHIP is 0.85. You didn't really think Matt's ERA was 0.85 did you?
