Jason is a lead writer for MLB, and he recently commented that the Giants just might be fed up with Pablo's weight and injury problems.
That the may have grown tired of him simply not living up to his potential.
A month ago, I might have agreed, but since he's dropped a gazillion pounds?
Not anymore.
Some of the plays he's made at 3B have simply been astounding.
This was the guy I expect ALL year long. See, I foolish ASSsumed that when he lost all of that weight a couple of seasons back, he'd keep it off.
Now that he's in such better shape, he's a different player.
Why he's still not hitting with power could be plugged in to his tight back problems.
I've only had back problems once, but it crippled me in EVERY aspect of life, and that includes sitting on the can!
Don't know how bad it is, or if his foot is every at 80% but those two points could be two, huge reasons for the drop off.
Either way, as Jason points out, with the LACK of 3Bmen on the market, it's worth hanging on to fatso for at least one more year.
Just my thoughts.

I havent read the article, but I tend to agree more with what you have observed here, Boly. Pablo has been making plays that were more like what we saw in 2011 when he was a GG finalist. And as you correctly point out, the market for FA 3rd basemen this offseason is grim. Even if there WAS a good one out there, AT&T Park wouldn't be his first choice to play. I don't know if the Giants are "fed up" or not. None of the Giants beat writers have indicated that is the case. But even if they were, the prudent move this offseason would be to just tell Pablo if he wants to stay in SF, he needs to stay in shape. But I tend to believe that now that he has a personal chef, this will be a non-issue. That move alone pretty much shows he gets it now.

One of the beat writers did, Dood, Alex Pavlovic. He had a similar story and even said teammates were fed up with his weight struggles too. I'm glad they don't have to make a decision on him for another year though. If he's in shape all next year I'm pretty sure they'll look to re-sign him.

If Pablo's such a defensive whiz, why do they often replace him with Arias late in games? Pablo may be reaching the end of his rope with the weight. I think he's going to have to train like a demon this offseason and show up in excellent shape next spring to convince people he's serious.

The defensive replacement started when he was out of shape and struggling, and I really don't know how many great plays he needs to make before Bochy stops doing it. It's just over managing on his part.

I'm not sure about that. Arias is a pretty good defensive player.

Pablo will show up to spring training in shape next year because he knows what's at stake. But how many times have we been through this? Are the Giants going to sign him to a 4-5 year deal knowing that his weight has been an ongoing issue to this point. I would seriously doubt whether they want to invest in a questionable product. And we know Pablo wouldn't be traded during the season if the Giants are in a pennant race. So if the Giants want value for Pablo, the best time might be this off season.

The Giants would be selling low if they try to trade Pablo this offseason. Their best route would be to keep him and, if he stays in shape all year, consider giving him a new contract. Or if they decide to not chance it, they can make a QO and get a high draft pick. If he slides back again next season, the Giants probably wouldnt be opposed to trading him at the deadline, and they would be able to get more than they would this offseason.
Out of curiosity, who would you replace Pablo with after shitcanning him this offseason, Boagie?

Two words for you guys. Weight clause. Insist on a contract where he has to be a certain weight or he doesn't get paid. It's been done before.

Boagie- Haven't put that much thought into it because even though it makes sense, its not likely to happen. I have mentioned the fact that Scutaro can play third and that Ian Kinsler is a free agent.

Have you checked Ian Kinsler's stats this year, Boagie? Very similar to one Pablo Sandoval. They're both hitting in the .270's, and Kinsler has one more HR in a similar amount of at bats. There's two basic differences though. Sandoval is 27 and Kinsler is 31. Second is Kinsler plays in a launching pad and Sandoval plays in a pitcher's park. If you want to go to career, Kinsler is a lifetime .273 hitter to Sandoval's .297. Pablo is a much better player.

I'm fully aware Pablo is better than Kinsler offensively. When Pablo is healthy he's among the best pure hitters in baseball. But what if a trade including Pablo could land us a left fielder? It could be that overall we become a better team.
Again, just to be clear, I like Pablo..I would be perfectly happy if the Giants signed him to a 10 year deal. But I envision Pablo testing the market next off season and I doubt the Giants will be the highest bidder.

I think a good hitting third baseman is a lot harder to find than a good hitting corner outfielder. David Wright and Ryan Zimmerman are the only two third basemen in the NL I would take over Pablo and they make a whole lot more money than Panda. Besides, he's a free agent in one year which reduces his value, plus the weight thing is something that will hold down his value too. Throw in that he's coming off a disappointing season and you're never going to get equal value for him.
