Are there possible roster interrelationships between pitchers Jean Machi, Yusmeiro Petit, Guillermo Moscoso, Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito?

If Lincecum wasn't included in that list I would say they're related by the fact that they all stink. I think you're suggesting that one or two of them won't be here by Aug 1, and one of the others will take their place. The Giants are supposedly looking to receive a major league ready starter for Javier Lopez in trade talks. I guess they're already scrambling around for next year's rotation. Looking at how the Dodgers spending ways have finally begun to pay off, it appears the Giants are going to have to open the checkbook after this season and not think that pitchers like Moscoso are the answer.

Dood - well if this happens we can look forward to having a nice comfortable, interesting but not WS-threatening, 80-85 win roster for the next 4 or 5 years. "Major League ready" means Bud Norris when he was putting up his 4.73 ERA years. If this Giants season has been about lowering expectations...Bravo! Might as well bring back the Crazy Crab and the Croix de Candlesticks and a rebirth of slogans like "you gotta like these kids (but don't expect another banner soon)."
oh joy

Mark -- If Lincecum wasn't included in that list I would say they're related by the fact that they all stink. Rog -- Moscoso and Machi have actually pitched pretty well this seaosn. Mark -- I think you're suggesting that one or two of them won't be here by Aug 1, and one of the others will take their place. Rog -- I felt that if Machi were sent down yesterday instead of Petit, it might indicate an impending conclusion as Giants for Linececum and Zito. That didn't happen. I think it is still possible that Moscoso will augur doom for Zito if Barry doesn't turn it around quickly. Mark -- The Giants are supposedly looking to receive a major league ready starter for Javier Lopez in trade talks. Rog -- Man, that would be GREAT! Mark -- I guess they're already scrambling around for next year's rotation. Rog -- It is possible 3/5th of the rotaton won't be back in 2014, although I would say Ryan Vogelsong is pretty much a lock. Mark -- Looking at how the Dodgers spending ways have finally begun to pay off, it appears the Giants are going to have to open the checkbook after this season and not think that pitchers like Moscoso are the answer. Rog -- Something must be wrong with Moscoso, but he had a 3.38 ERA with Oakland just two years ago. He has struck out a batter per inning in AAA this season. He throws 91 and is just 29. He has a 1.30 career WHIP. Given that the Giants appear to have picked him up for very little, I like the move. As I say though, SOMETHING must be wrong with him. It doesn't jump out though. JUST because the Giants trade Javier Lopez for a starting pitcher, they relegate themselves to mediocrity for the next 4 or 5 years? Kind of like a year ago when you gave up on the season? Heck, if nothing else, the Giants might trade Lopez and then sign him again next winter. What are the two areas the Giants most need to address before next season? Outfield and starting pitching. Is it bad to get a head start by trading a very good LOOGY for a young, developing starting pitcher? It's almost as if first you say to us that you don't want to trade away the future and now you're saying you don't want to build it. Javier Lopez has been excellent for the Giants despite being described as a, well you know. But he's a specialist not a regular, and he's 36 on a team you say should look to its young players. I'm getting mixed (up?) signals here. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1929&page=1#ixzz2aShRmmFr

Dood - it's not the loss of Lopez that bothers me...but rather how much quality can the Giants expect in exchange for a LOOGY? You can expect another Kickham or Surkamp quality type arm with a very low ceiling. If this rumor turns out to be true, it means the Giants no longer are aiming for the stars...they're aiming for the trees. Color me not thrilled.

Dood - it's not the loss of Lopez that bothers me...but rather how much quality can the Giants expect in exchange for a LOOGY? Rog -- Now THERE I think you have a good question. Randy -- You can expect another Kickham or Surkamp quality type arm with a very low ceiling. Rog -- You may well be right here, but the difference is the Giants are looking for an arm that is READY (or presumably at least very close). Randy -- If this rumor turns out to be true, it means the Giants no longer are aiming for the stars...they're aiming for the trees. Color me not thrilled. Rog -- This one move wouldn't really show much one way or the other, would it? It would be a minor move designed to get something out of nothing. If the Giants can truly get a major league ready starter for Lopez, why wouldn't they? Perhaps if nothing else, that starter could be included in a winter deal for an outfielder. Let's not forget how disappointed you were three years ago when the Giants acquired "only" Lopez as their left-handed reliever when you coveted Shawn Marshall. Both pitchers have gon on to pitch very well. You thought the Giants were aiming for trees (and perhaps even the lower limbs) when they traded for Lopez originally. In reality they may not have reached the stars, but they certainly got at least to the moon. They got high enough that now you're unhappy with getting a major league-ready starter for two months of Javier's services.
