I like Matt Garza, but his trade to the Rangers today shows the very high value of starting pitchers.
Matt may be simply a two-month rental for the Rangers, but he brought no fewer than four prospects to the Cubbies.
The top prospect to go was 3rd baseman/right fielder Mike Olt. Olt was ranked the #22 overall prospect by Baseball America coming into this season, but he has really struggled at the plate this season due to vision problems.
The 2nd prospect was pitcher C.J. Edwards, who has yielded 62 hits and 34 walks while striking out 122 in 93 innings in A ball. He has posted a 1.83 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.
The other two prospects haven't yet been named, and one would presume they are lesser lights. But two pretty decent prospects for a rental pitcher shows just how highly thought-of starting pitchers are these days.

Would you have dealt Timmy for that package?

Actually, I believe pitcher Justin Grimm was also included in the deal. The fourth is player to be named.

Allen -- Would you have dealt Timmy for that package? Rog -- That's a good question. It would have depended in part on how I evaluated the prospects. Allen- Nice dodge.

Allen -- Would you have dealt Timmy for that package? Rog -- That's a good question. It would have depended in part on how I evaluated the prospects. Allen- Nice dodge. Rog -- Good point. I wanted to be more specific, but there is an unusual situation involved here. What appears to be the key player the Cubs received for Garza is a highly ranked prospect who has stumbled this season apparently due to a vision problem. The big question for me would be, can and will this vision problem be fixed? It's hard enough to evaluate prospects from afar, but the unusual question here prevents it my having much chance of being able to do so accurately.
