Ryan Braun has been suspended for the rest of the season due to the Biogenesis hoo-ha. How long before Don claims he's the victim of an anti-Semite conspiracy? I think Braun is just the first domino of many that will fall.
Matt Garza to the Rangers for Justin Grimm, Mike Olt, C.J. Edwards and a player to be named.
And (hang on to your hats for this one) Eugenio Velez was released by the Blue Jays' Buffalo affiliate.

Just poking a little fun, Don. You don't know me well enough to make many of the assumptions you've made about me, which of course are incorrect. My mom is from Indiana (Terre Haute) if that helps.

Question...now that Braun has admitted to being a liar, a cheat and a big fat phony, would you want to see him in a Giants uniform if the Brewers decide to part ways?

Rog -- You would be better served to apologize and put it behind us. The only player of all the ones you have falsely accused me of putting down because they were Jewish was Sandy Koufax. And I know Sandy is Jewish only because of something I respect him for -- not pitching on Jewish holidays. You've made a lot of dumb statements here IMO Don, but this one was by far the worst. The others were mostly just dumb; this one was born of prejudice (and it wasn't mine). Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1911#ixzz2ZojqFxpF

Randy -- Question...now that Braun has admitted to being a liar, a cheat and a big fat phony, would you want to see him in a Giants uniform if the Brewers decide to part ways? Rog -- Personally, I would. It hasn't always been easy, but I have learned to separate a player's morals and off-field activities from his playing ability. I do think baseball should do a much better job of testing for steroid use and that the penalties should be even stiffer. My girlfriend thinks (along with Allen) that the first offense should warrant a lifetime suspension. I would probably favor 100 games for the first offense and a lifetime suspension for the second. To be honest, I wouldn't be totally against a lifetime ban right out of the chute. I am more of a "give-a-guy-a-second-chance" kind of guy, but I might indeed have to go immediately to the lifetime ban on this one. Let's take me off the fence on this one and say that I would go for the lifetime ban the first time. But without knowing the attitude in the clubhouse (which may have been implied by the decision), I would have taken Melky Cabrera back in the playoffs last season. And I do give Melky some credit for allowing the rules to be applied differently in determing the NL batting champion. If he hadn't, he would have been the winner under the rules at the time. I don't think these guys about to be punished were on steroids...some other drug.....I don't see how sports can actually pick out the users...there are many guys who are big and toned who don't use drugs and there are guys who are small and did use the drugs.....Aaron admitted he used "Uppers" when he played...not illegal, but either were some of the steroids that were used....I don't see how sports can get out of the hole they are in, especially since they don't have the tests or testing system to catch all cheaters....next they will go after those new caffein drinks...

I wouldn't call steroid use an "off field activity". And hell no, I would never want to see Braun play for the Giants.

Baseball and other sports doesn't want to punish the cheaters or publicize use because it's bad for business. If they just made the penalty for a positive test a lifetime ban, it would serve both as a deterrent, and show the paying public that they're serious about eliminating the problem.

Whether their present teams make a qualifying offer to a potential free agent has a lot to do with the amount a team can trade a player for and also with the contract the player will ultimately receive.
If his team makes a qualifying offer to a player, teams signing him may have to give up a high draft pick in the following year's draft. Since the cost of signing a player is not only the dollars paid to the player, but the draft pick as well, teams are reluctant to bid as high as they otherwise would. These free agents are often among the last to be signed, since teams usually look first at players they can acquire without giving up a pick.
This also affects what a team would offer in terms of players when trading for a potential free agent at the deadline. If the team feels it will make a qualifying offer (about $14-$15 million for one year) to the player, it can give up more in trade -- since the prospects it trades will be partially replaced by adding an extra draft pick.
This helps the team doing the trading, since the player or players they received must be worth at least as much to them.
The Giants would almost certainly make a qualifying offer to Pence and likely will be interested in re-signing him long term. The player can accept the qualifying offer or he can opt for free agency, including working out a deal with his present club.
I'm not sure if a team is prohibited from signing sa a free agent a player it has recently traded, so in theory the Giants might be able to get all they could for Hunter via trade and then signi him as a free agent anyway.
Hunter has expressed an interest in returning to the Giants. If they don't sign or re-sign him, they would be looking at quite a makeover for their outfield. Pagan should be back, but the Giants would likely be looking for not one but two starting outfielders. At the very least it would seem they would look for one starting outfielder and a strong platoon partner for Gregor Blanco.

One guy who could be available is Michael Morse, now with Seattle. Morse has been hurt for much of the year, but given a full season with Washington in 2011, he hit 31 homers, and hit 18 in 102 games in 2012. He's a .290 lifetime hitter, but doesn't walk alot. According to baseball reference he could be a FA next year.

According to baseball reference he could be a FA next year. Rog -- I was a little surprised the Nationals traded him back to the Mariners. Good hitter with pop. Nicknamed "The Beast," as his 6-foot-5, 240 pound stature might indicate. Contract-wise, he is in the same position Hunter Pence was a year ago. Only real negative is that, even though he came up as a shortstop (really?), Morse is a lousy fielder. He's 31, so if the Giants like him and could re-sign him, he could be around for a while. He's at 2/$10.5 now, eligible for his 3rd season of arbitration, and will likely command a pretty penny in free agency (although clearly less than Hunter Pence). Drop Zito and Lincecum, and you have plenty of money. Being that he hasn't played a full season since 2011, he may not be as expensive as you think. I'm thinking the big problem would be selling him on playing at AT&T.

I'm thinking the big problem would be selling him on playing at AT&T. Rog -- That, his defense and what the Giants would need to give up for him. If they wait until after the 2014 season, of course, they might not have to give up anything for him. In that case though, they would be getting a guy who would first play for them at age 33. One who is already slow, a poor fielder and possibly injury-prone. If players didn't have some type of warts, their original team would likely be re-signing them before they hit the free agent market. A team needs to do a good job of scouting, of course, and also to a certain extent get lucky. I think baseball reference lists Morse as being a 2014 FA. Cots has him listed as a 2014 FA, although they list him as a first baseman.

Allen, you mentioned Morse, but didn't say whether you wanted him or not. I see your strong anti Braun stance and remember your legendary Bonds stance, so all I can guess is that you're not aware that Morse was suspended for steroid use back in 2005. That was a long time ago but the guy IS huge, so nothing would surprise me if it comes out. I'd stay away if I were the Giants. Even though I believe in giving second chances, the risk involved in giving him alot of money would not be worth it.
