Sabean has gotten lucky, been heavenly blessed, pushed the right buttons... what ever, with the way he's struck gold in the last three seasons with: Huff Burrell Uribe Renteria Rameriz Lopez Ross Scutaro All of those guys were major... MAJOR reasons we won in 2010 and/or 2012. I remember the bitching and moaning about Lopez; "He's just a LOOGY, nothing more. What a wasted move." I remember my complaints about Burrell; "disaster waiting to happen on defense." And others: "he's done! His best days are far behind him." On Scutaro; I was at sea on a cruise last summer, and I saw a guy in a SF Giants hat in the casino. I asked if he'd seen any news on the Giants and he said: "We've just picked up Marco Scutaro." "Scutaro?" I said, angry, bitter, frustrated and surprised? "Marco frickin' Scutaro?!?!?! "That's the BEST that moron Sabean could do? ?" Well, in light of what happened, yeah. It was. And it worked out rather nicely, too! There were more, but that's all I can remember. Did Sabean just do it again with Fancouer? Has he once more found a bottle with hot lightening in it? I don't have a clue, but I'm anxious to find out. He's not old. He can run. He CAN play defense, and he CAN throw, and he's got power. All of the things we have needed from a LF all year long. Now, we'll all keep our fingers crossed and see. boly

You left out Sabean being called the "Village idiot" when he traded Matt Williams to Cleveland...and the team went on to win the West that season.
as for Franceour, it's a no risk move, like many Sabes has made. If it works, it's all good, but the main thing is the rest of the team is stepping up now.

I had forgotten that one, Randy. Thanks.
And you are so right; a NO risk move. If it works, GREAT!
If not... we're no worse off than before.

Given that in the next 7 seasons, the Giants averaged 92.6 wins per season, even a "semi-idiot" would be a reach.

Hard to argue with the overal results, but Sabean got extremely lucky on the Matt Williams deal. No one anticipated Kent ever coming close to the player he became.

The only reason he got rid of Williams was because Barry didn't want him here.

Dood - Or...maybe Sabean is just a better judge of talent than anyone gave him credit for at the time. You can call it luck if you want but 7 straight seasons of success has to be a bit more than just luck. I think you and Rog just call anything you don't know how to explain "luck"

Dood - I never heard that Barry and Kent ever got along that great, but they were somehow able to co-exist and make the team better. I think there was more to Matt's anymosity towards the Giants than just Bonds...ever wonder why he's coaching in Arizona and not SF? It isn't because Barry is still here.

Well, now if you get rid of one guy because Barry didn't like him, and bring n another guy and barry doesn't like him either, what are you going to do? You can't just keep getting rid of guys again and again. Maybe the Giants thought getting rid of Matt and Will Clark for barry was enough. Maybe Matt is angry at the Giants for letting Barry dictate his departure.

I didn't say that Sabean has been lucky during his entire run. But he got lucky on the Kent deal.

Ok, explain it to me. Did Sabean know Kent would become one ot the top offensive second baseman in MLB history? Did he know Williams would suddenly become injury prone? The deal was made to placate Bonds. The Giants were lucky that Kent (who had been pretty mediocre his entire career), suddenly developed into a great hitter.
