Brandon Belt has become a rather large enigma for me.
On the one hand, I see that quick, short stroke to the ball, and on the other, is him CONSTANTLY chasing the same crap high and away from the plate.
I keep waiting for him to do what Matt Williams finally did; put it all together and stop chasing at the same pitches that pitchers consistantly use to get him out.
And I'm still waiting.
Speaking only of Giant hitters, and in recent memory, Marco Scutaro seems to be one of the smartest Giant hitters I've seen in a long time, even smarter than Posey. And make no mistake, Posey is very smart, and pretty disciplined.
Marcho is exceptionally disciplined, rarely chases, and always seems to have a solid plan in place when he's hitting.
Contrast that with Belt, who, admittedly has much MUCH less experience (and that, likely, is the key word here; EXPERIENCE), who appears to have NO PLAN (ZERO) when he goes to the plate.
These last 3 games have been perfect examples.
No one on, and he's likely to bang the ball.
Put someone in scoring position, and he's so antsy he almost wets himself.
Thus the enigma. I see the potential, but the results leave a lot to be desired.
To be fair, this is really Brandon's first full year, and we all, me included, need to be patient. As I said, experience.
But honestly, I expect him to have done what Crawford has done at this point in time; learned from his mistakes and adjusted.
My fingers remained crossed for him, though, because I do see his upside.
Be nice if he did a re assessment over the break, and started showing those adjusments in the second half.
Right now, I'm happy with 2 in a row.

I think Belt has to do a little actual hitting so he can convince the umps that the outside pitch is not a strike...just as Crawford did...Belt gets very frustrated when the umps seem to always call the outside pitch off the black a strike and so he chases it...he should go up to the plate looking for that pitch and driving it to left field...if he gets a few hits to left, pitchers will have to mix it up and give him a pitch he can pull.
I noticed today the Comcast "Bayareanews" on the web says that Crawford has regained his stroke...something I said a week ago the day before the hits started to come....as I said then, his hand injury appeared to affect his grip and thus his stroke....he was swinging very weakly...then it changed...

Belt is having his problems, no doubt. But I bet he leads the league by a wide margin in having pitches out of the strike zone called strikes by the umpires. I could see where this could lead to some confusion on his part. He doesn't know where the strike zone is, and can't trust the umps to call pitches accurately. With today's umps and their free floating strike zones, this happens to all hitters, but it seems to happen more often to Brandon.

I didn't see the program, Don, but a week ago, I noticed the same thing.
And not just by Crawford. A lot of Giants were having very tentative, timid strokes.
Now Pence. I've never seen a guy get jammed more often than he has in the last month.
He's going so bad, I'll bet he could "jam" himself with a pitch 2 feet outside!
I'm being faceteaous.

Pence is pulling off the ball so much, it's just ridiculous. Does the guy ever look at video of his ABs? he goes best when he hits the ball to right center. Now he looks as though he's trying to pull everything down the line.

Boagie- Great post. I agree Posey and Scutaro are the two smartest hitters on the Giants. Other ex Giants I can think of that fit the same mold are Burrell, Ellis Burks, Jeff Kent, Barry Bonds (of course.) Is it a coincidence that all these players had good careers? I don't think so. So why are our players not taught to hit this way? Not only does this method enable hitter to get better pitches, but it also makes pitchers have to work harder. Furthermore...why is Muelens our hitting coach while its likely that a few of the ex Giants I mentioned would be interested in the job?
