Saw a picture of Lincecum yesterday, sans that STUPID looking, shaggy, unkempt, unsightly crap on his head called hair.
Now he looks more professional, and I say, it's about darned time.
You want to be a rebel, do it in your own garage, or take a time machine back to 1861.
That shaggy crap made him look like a moron who shouldn't be taken seriously.
As I said; I'm showing my age.

I liked the look until I read that the glasses weren't to improve his vision, but just for looks. What's up with that? As someone who wore glasses for a good part of their life, ( I eventually got Lasik. Best money I ever spent.) I can tell you they're a pain in the rear. Why would someone wear glasses if they didn't have to?

I liked the look of the early Tim the best. Very clean and youthful look.
But, clearly, appearance is up the the individual. Individual tastes differ, and so do individual reactions.
Let's play ball!

Boagie- I liked his look when he was winning Cy Young awards.

Could not care less about how Tim wears his hair. He could grow a Mohawk and a Brian Wilson beard and it wouldn't matter to me. Just win games! You guys sound like a bunch of old fogeys complaining about hair length. Get off my lawn, you young whippersnapper!

Yeah I gotta admit Im with Rx on this one. A player's looks couldnt matter less to me as a fan. If short hair Tim returns to his CY stuff I'll be all for it. If he's getting torched, I'll say grow it back, Samson!

I pretty much said that in the title of my post, Mark.
But here's the thing; Big stars like tim are role models for our yoot, and as such it is imperative that they look and act like professionals.
Not like thugs (Dennis Rodmoron), or surfer dudes who could care less (Tim)
Our children have lost the meaning as to just what the word "professional" means. And I don't just mean in sports.
Professional is an attitude, an understanding that others are watching and emulating what you do, how you conduct yourself and how you act.
These "others" could be children (like the teeny-boppers I teach), or younger co workers who work under your tutalage.
So while I agree that we want our guys to win, I have to strongly, and blatantly DISAGREE because of who they are, and who they effect.

You need to lighten up, Boly, kids are kids, and that's what's in style these days. Tim is literally a throwback to Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver compared to 99 % of the NBA. Check out a player with the Miami Heat named Chris Anderson, for example. If I saw him walking down the street, I would run for my life!

While I agree with your sentiment here, Boly, I don't think the length of Lincecum's hair is leading to the breakdown of society.
Randy Johnson had long hair for most of his career, and he set a good example of professionalism that you'd want a young pitcher to follow.

Boagie- I made the mistake of watching part of the NBA All-Star game last night, talk about unprofessional. I am sure I'm living up to this thread title, but there's absolutely no skill involved in basketball anymore. All I saw were a bunch of over-paid idiots trying to dunk the ball, because that's all they know how to do. One guy shot 2 air balls in one quarter. most everyone who shot the ball outside of 10 ft missed. These are the best players? How anyone could claim Lebron James is better than Michael Jordan is beyond me. Lebron might be the best today, but he's the best amongst a group of talentless idiots. If you still watch basketball today, I'm sorry, but imo Jordan, Magic and Bird would absolutely wipe the floor with these ego-inflated kids.

I don't agree about the shooting thing, Boagie, because they're all pretty good at shooting threes too, but I do think because of the dunks and three point line, the art of shooting mid range jumpers is a thing of the past. Back in the day, there wasn't a player in the NBA who could miss an open 10-15 footer, but now when you see a player like Kobe or Carmelo Anthony who never miss a wide open shot, it's a rarity. I still love to watch the NBA, but it definitely was better back in the day, I agree there. I think the league has become stagnated because of the salary cap and the lack of great talent available in the draft. If you're bad there's a chance you can become good by creating cap space for free agents and picking at the top of the draft, but if you're a mediocre team you're doomed to be mediocre forever. You pick in the middle of the draft and even mediocre talent caps you out. It's literally impossible to improve your team.

Ok, first on Boly's point...I think you need to make a distinction between setting an example and following fashion trends. There can be long haired hippie looking people who are as upstanding as anyone out there. I think Tim has always behaved in a forthright manner, possibly with the exception of him being in a car with pot in it. Even that is pretty tame by today's standards.
The example that comes immediately to mind is 49ers QB Collin Kaepernick. He is tatted up all over his upper body but this kid is probably the best role model out there I can think of among young athlete stars. I've seen tons of his interviews and interviews of those who know him and what I hear all equates to a genuinely professional young man in every sense of the word. One clueless columnist had the nerve to criticize him for all the tats on his arms...not as a pro athlete but as a QB (as if QBs should be judged differently than offensive tackles or linebackers). Kaep was cool about it even though it kind annoyed him since all the tats are either scriptures or encouraging phrases.
People should be judged on their actions, not their looks.

Mark, we are not going to agree on this one.
Lighten up? Because of fashion?
Fashion has us poking holes in our bodies for genital, nipple, and lip piercings!
That's fashion?
That's sadism. sorry.
Just because something is in style, does not make it desirable, nor good.
Please don't forget I deal with 170+ kids every day, and have done so for the last 30 years.
I have SEEN, up close and personal, how what professional atheletes do, effects children.
And usually, it ain't good.
It AIN'T.
And as to Randy's "People should be judged on actions, not looks," I agree.
But again, because I deal with the "yoot" of today, they don't SEE they actions, all they SEE is how they are dressed.
The see the idiot tatoos, piercings, and the money & chicks & sex that, in their eyes goes with it.
So though what you suggest is admirable, the reality is different. You know the saying... "in a perfect world..."
