Today is July 25th, the trade deadline 6 days away.
So I pose this question: If you were the GM of the Giants, what would you do?
And I pose that question because right now, Randy and my plan to blow it up and start all over, is, well, over.
No chance of that happening now.
None.
As I posted 3 or 4 days before reporters starting talking about it, IF Farhan starts cleaning house, he loses the clubhouse.
Period.
But the fact still remains that we HAVE to improve our club mostly at the AAA level, but also, and perhaps more importantly, with players at, or close to big league ready.
How do we do that?
Since I'm asking everyone to play GM, here's what I would do.
1-I would not move Bum unless I got offered something that didn't just knock my shoes off, but my socks and pants as well.
2-I move Dyson, not Smith.
I'm no longer sure that Smith would get the bigger and better return.
10 days ago, yes. But now?
Now...?
3-This pains me to say but IF I could come up with a better 2Bman than my favorite, Joey the P., I'd do it.
Joey has gone into the toilet and not come out. This was to be my make or break year with him, and I was sure he'd bounce back.
He did not.
4-I'd also consider moving Moronta, who has tremendous upside with his stuff, and should bring a decent return.
I know I'd sure be listening to offers.
That's pretty much it. Some moves that, depending upon the return, makes us a better club now, and adds youth for the future without destroying the clubhouse.
IF the GM makes wholesale changes and the team, and his future with future players in the system, blows up in his face.
However, though we are winning, the club needs a major league 'tweak,' IMHO, to be more than just a pretender in the race to the series.
That's why I say we need a 2nd baseman.

I'd move bum Dyson and smith...maybe even belt and panik if possible. In the off-season I might let go of more. I believe this hot streak won't last long enough to make the playoffs.

I'd like to move Melancon, but nobody would want him. Outside of that, I think blowing up your team is a piss poor message to send to your guys who have played their tails off to get to where they are now. It would be the same message that Mike Rizzo sent to the Nationals when they shut down Strasburg a few years back.

Agree, boagie, blowing up the team now sends the wrong message to everyone; players and fans.
A month ago... heck up until a week ago I was all in on the "blow it up and rebuild," plan.
But not now.
When you go 30-17 over 47 games, that's impressive.
Do I think we have enough to even GET to the World Series?
Nope. I do not.
But with a tweak or two we have a shot; not a great one, but a shot.
And in Bochy's last year, I think that's important.
Another point to consider, if one were Farhan, is that what he does by next Wednesday will go a long way towards him establishing the kind of man, the kind of GM he is, and hopes to be.
If he blows it up now, if he does as Randy suggested above, he shows everyone he's not a man of honor; he's not a man of integrity and that he doesn't give one hot damn about the fans, the players or anyone other than his own opinion.
He will lose the confidence of his players for sure because he's basically telling them, "I don't care what you do. It's my way or the highway, and besides, I'm smarter than you are, I know best."
Not a good message to be sending in a game played by emotional humans.

I’d actually do a bit of both! I’d add and subtract. The Giants bullpen is good and it’s deep with a few prospects in the minors. Therefore I’d trade relievers like Smith, Watson, and Dyson and try to add offense. However the only way I’d add players is for a low level prospect or by taking back a bad contract. The Mets did this in the offseason when they added Edwin Diaz and took on the Cabo deal but this deal was a disaster because their GM is an idiot. A smart GM can pull something like this off. We have one.

I do not trade even one, not one, of our top, blue chippers in the farm system to acquire a player.
We have enough bullpen to bring someone in, as you and I have both suggested.

I'm confused at why exactly it is a bad message to say that you want to get value for your walk players. The players made the moves necessary with their awful start to the season.

The Giants are on more than a hot streak, Randy. 30-17 in 47 games is a pretty big deal.
The terrible message would come straight from Farhan and it would be saying; "we don't care WHAT you are doing now, we're rebuilding.
"Shut your pie hole and take it!"
That's not a good thing.
That, if I'm a player, is an insult of the highest degree.
Yes, a couple of players are in their walk years, but I think we have more than a legit shot to sign Madison back next year.
He has been very vocal in the fact that he does not want to leave.
It's not the same with Smith.
Smith has no real connection to the Giants as Bum does.
Smith, as I said in a different thread, I WOULD trade.
I think he could and would bring us some very good prospects.
We have to make some moves to get younger, that is for sure, but they have to be strategic moves that don't disrupt team chemistry.
I think we can afford to move either Dyson or Smith, not both.
In the right deal, Moronta, too.

I'm with Flannery. If you respect Bum you need to trade him or extend him. If you hold him then give a qualifying offer he won't be a true free agent because many teams don't want to give away their 1st round pick.

If I'm wrong ill gladly eat crow but come on Boly. You're pinning your hopes on guys who never before have played at this level. As much as we all would love to see it, the likelihood of this team making the playoffs is just not very realistic. If we miss out on getting value for these guys its going to make this off-season very painful. It will set the rebuild back for years

Please don't misunderstand me, Randy.
I wanted them to blow it up and start over, but they can't at this point so I'm simply saying that the GM has to make the best of the situation, and roll the dice.
If there's a chance, they have to take the shot.
As I posted in another thread, I don't think we have much chance at all to get the WS.
What I've been posting and saying is this:
1-As much as I don't trust Farhan, he can't blow up the team with them in the race.
And they are in the race for the Wild Card.
2-Trading the farm right now basically destroys whatever credibility he has with the fans, but worse, the players on the team.
3-Trading his chips for future players not only destroys his relationship with the players he has, but ALL veterans in the league will look at him and say, "what the ...?"
He'll be labeled a GM who can't be trusted.
At this point, we have no other choice but to make the best run we have...
PROVIDED we don't get beaten by both the Padres and Phillies.
That happens, and we ship out the farm, as you and I wanted to do all year.

Id prefer a gm that does right for a rebuilding team than one that throws away a chance to stockpile young talent for a team with a razor slim chance to make the playoffs

So would I, Randy, but the players and the team have backed Farhan into a corner.
Now he really can't do what we wanted done.

If Fargeek is backed into a corner he did it to himself. He should have been honest from day one that this is a full blown rebuild and nothing was going to change that focus

I don’t believe Zaidi cares what the players think. He wasn’t here for the glory and when he looks at the veteran core he sees a group of fading players not getting it done. If he goes into rebuilding mode why would it matter to him that players are unhappy, he’s not trying to win anyway. Let these players with the no trade clauses that Sabean and Evans gave them demand a trade, that would make Zaidi’s day! He’ll do what he thinks is best. He prefers to keep Smith and Bum for a WC run, but if a desperate team makes an offer they’re gone.

A week ago I might not have agree with you, Mark, but based upon these last 5 games or so, I think I now do.
Anybody could, and after the next 3 games, and should go.
The Giants played themselves into contention, and now, they're playing themselves right back out of it.
Nicely done, boys.
Ya'all keep talking about how much talent this team has; how much potential ya'all have, and now ya'all have reverted to what you were in April and May.
Impotent clods waving a wooden stick at the plate.
They kept referencing that this streak looked like the first half of 2016...how nice of them.
But this last handful of games now reminds me of the 2nd half of 2016.
Like I said, way to go, boys.

And then they win Sunday, and make us look silly again! Of course, the Giants can’t be swayed by one particular game, they have to look at the totality. If they view themselves as contenders go get a bat. They should have gotten Domingo Santana in the offseason and didn’t, but he’s available again and they should be on that. If they view themselves as non contenders, go trade those pitchers. Doing nothing shouldn’t be an option.

Yeah, it did.
16 hits and timely hitting; that's what we'd been seeing in the previous 49 games. Nice to see it back again.
I know very little of Santiago other than the fact that he's an outfielder with power.
But why did Milwaukee give up on him, and why is Seattle now willing to move him?
I don't think we need an outfielder, Mark, I really don't.
A bat? Probably, but not an outfielder.

If the Giants trade Bum it will be to the Yanks or the Twins. Stromen being picked up by the Mets will help boost the offers thrown our way. its real simple guys...is it more important to have a chance at the playoffs this year, or year after year contending for titles?

A month ago I would have, and in fact, DID agree with you, Randy.
But at this point, the way we are playing, I say we go for it now.
How many chances does a team have?
You have to take advantage of the opportunity when it arises.
Now that said, IF...IF this team was limping forward, as we were in the 2nd half of the 2016 season, I'd agree with you 100%
But we're not limping along.
I sense some magic in the air, and that makes all the difference in the world.

Well if you have no faith in the gm beyond this year, by all means you put all your eggs in the "go for it now" basket. But if you feel like our young players, combined with those that trades would bring will continue to get far better and produce far better teams than 2 games over 500, then you make trades this week.

I'll make my initial decision about him after I see what he does in the next 40+ hours.

Well, if you’re calling him Santiago you really don’t know who he is! Hit 30 homeruns for Milwaukee two years ago but had an off year last year and they traded him because they have so many bats on that team. He already has 20 homeruns so you know the bad year was a fluke. Hit close to .280 in 2017 and is close to that again this year. Just 26. Only drawback is that he’s poor defensively but he’s the right handed power bat they need.

I know ive said this a million times but I have full faith and trust in whatever FZ decides to do...The dude recognizes talent...What he did with Joe and Reed to start the season was more of a sad reflection of the teams roster and to his credit the experiment was shortlived...I love all the speculation going around ( latest rumors have Madbum going to the Astros) but the bottom line kis nkbodyhas a clue as to what wioll hapen...I have nomproblem waiting another 26 hours to find out...Now let s beat thos Phillies!!!

I agree with most regarding trades. I would throw in these additives: Lots of sellers and the idea of grabbing a top prospect seems less likely now to me.
Dyson and Smith are free agents to be, indicating that they may be of less interest to all but a limited trade partner group. That says Atlanta and LAD in the NL and top 3 in the AL. Either is fine if it nets even a lower top 20 in their organization. Trading both seems non-serving for the Giants.
Pomerantz is a certain trade piece to me. Moronta is much less so IMO. The Latter needs to lose weight though.
The Giants need a power hitter at 3rd and another SP…can Longoria and Cueto be those guys. Even if 70% they are likely better values than any trade piece over the next 2-3 years.
I like the lefty-righty lineup, but as said Panik is the major sore point in this area. We will see but keep an eye on that Phillies series. Winning 2 of 3 is needed. Then Colorado.

Only a fool would even consider trading Moronta. He's young, has a huge arm and is under team control for a few years still. I see him as our future closer.

Rog -- I agree with both references, although the Giants are suddenly showing a little life again. Tough to win though when neither Madison nor Jeff is pitching that day. How the Giants fare on the other days will likely determine where the seasons ends up. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/5473/play-gm?page=1#ixzz5wZOR59YJ

What was weird was that watching the MLB Network most of the day, right up until the Greinke trade, they were calling Deadline Day a dud.
