Maybe it wasn't the late 90's, perhaps the early 2000's.

Where was the faith when I said we should start Matt Duffy at 3rd base before last season began? Or when I said the Padres didn't acquire enough to overtake the Giants last season? Rog -- I was with you on the Padres, citing their lack of hitting on the infield and their lack of defense in center field. But I thought Matt Duffy needed more seasoning, although I think Boly agree with you on Matt. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3186/year-outhouse-penthouse?page=2#ixzz3xSsKL4FV

Boagie- I won't dispute that claim. You're very in tune with the system, and I appreciate your contributions in that regard.
Don-....I was the first to suggest they play Matt at 3rd during spring training and until they blew 5 million on the Marlin Marvel....
Boagie- I dont deny you mentioned it in spring training, Don. However, Boly and I discussed it in November of 2015, before spring training even started. And I thought about the possibility prior to that.

I didn't know whether Matt was ready or not, but I felt it couldn't hurt for him to get in a little AAA ball, since he hadn't played at that level. Matt was definitely a surprise to me.
I think Matt reinforces a couple of points:
First, even though baseball positions each have their "role" at the plate and the hot corner is considered a power position, the thing is to put the best players on the field, regardless of their characteristics at the plate.
Second, as we have entered into more of a pitching era over the past decade, these "roles" have become even more blurred.
Matt is one of the reasons we are more aware of this than we were as a group a year ago. I know I have learned a lot in that regard. The 2015 Giants team that some feared wouldn't reach even triple digits in home runs got to 131 and finished 5th in the league in scoring.
