Mark -- The front office identified the leaks and fixed them, which is what they're supposed to do, and it made them the best team again. That's basically the Giants formula these days and 3 in 5 speaks to its success. Rog -- Brian Sabean has been lucky as well as good with his mid-season acquisitions the past five seasons. Last season would be a very good example. When Matt Cain went down, he quickly got Jake Peavy, who turned out to be the best mid-season acquisition in the majors -- cutting his ERA by more than half after joining the Giants. Think back to Marco Scutaro in 2012. Marco was hitting about .240 outside Coors Field while playing for the Rockies, but once he became a Giant, he hit .362 the rest of the season. Hunter Pence didn't hit for average, but he did drive in a ton of runs. We've mentioned the many players Brian added in 2010. And except for the Carlos Beltran trade, he has given up very little to make these acquisitions. And even Beltran hit .323 as a Giant, although injury limited his overall effectiveness. In describing the Giants' 2014 season, they were outstanding early (43-21), lousy in the middle of the season (20-36), very good at the end of the season (25-17), and outstanding again in the postseason (12-5). The Giants were up and down a lot more than most good teams, but they were good more than they were bad, and they were outstanding when it counted most.

Incidentally, during this fabulous run, only in 2012 did the Giants make the quarterfinals before the last game of the season.
At the end of 2010 and including the postseason, the Giants finished 31-15 . In 2012 they finished 22-10. Last season they finished 14-5. That's a combined 67-30 (.626). That's pretty darn good.
