Rog -- Here's why it was unrealistic to re-sign the Giants' five free agents. Sandoval 5/$95. Peavy 2/$24. Romo 2/$15. Morse 2/$16. Vogelsong 1/$8? That's a combined $54.5 million per season.
Boagie- I didn't suggest resigning Peavy.
Rog -- That might have reduced the cost for 2015 to about $42.5 million. I'm almost certain that is quite a bit more than the Giants budgeted. I think the guy quoted in an article here was low at $160 million, but that figure would have given the Giants about $17 million to spend.
Boagie -- As far as the others, I think they could have been had for cheaper if the Giants showed interest early on, rather than putting them all on the back burner.
Rog -- Perhaps they could have been. Certainly not Pablo, who was priority one right out of the box.
Boagie -- I believe Morse wanted to remain a Giant,
Rog -- I think you are probably right, although I'll bet playing within an hour of his home was his Plan 1A.
Boagie -- I'm sure Vogey did too.
Rog -- I think he still does.
Boagie -- Your numbers are the situation now, not the situation if the Giants had played it differently.
Rog -- I don't think there would have been a big difference. I think the Giants told their free agents right where they stood, letting them know there was interest but no guarantee. I don't think the Giants could have saved much if they had gone right after their own free agents, although you could be right that they might have saved a little.
They certainly didn't save anything with Pablo Sandoval though by going right after him.
Boagie -- The only unrealistic factor that remains is the chance of you ever considering anything beyond the numbers presented to you.
Rog -- That's not a fair comment at all, Boagie. What I have done is identify and analyze the salary numbers and constraints as best I could. Perhaps you might want to show us how much you think the Giants would have saved had they gone right after their free agents. I just don't think it would have been much.
As a related aside, Sergio Romo said he had the chance to close with at least one other team but that he wanted to return to the Giants. I don't think they could have saved much on Sergio. They would have saved a fair amount of money had they signed Vogelsong instead of Peavy. I doubt they'll spend much more on a left fielder than they would have needed to pay Morse. And they SAVED a ton of money by trading for McGehee instead of signing Pablo (even though that was his choice, not theirs).
Anyway, Boagie, instead of making a snide comment with no backup, let us know how you think it would have played out, so we can analyze that.
