They? Mays and Mantle? One rung above Snider. Of the three , Snider had the most favorable park for him as a hitter, yet Mays and Mantle hit more homers, and were better overall hitters. Defensively Duke finishes third as well. Nothing against Snider. Damn fine ballplayer. The other two are probably top ten all time.

Allen -- I don't think Mantle was underrated. He deserved alot of credit, and he got it. dk...and how much better were they than Snider??? Rog -- As Allen posted, both Mays and Mantle were a significant cut above the avocado farmer. This surprised me. Although he played 18 seasons, Duke managed only 2116 hits. Part of that was because of a good thing (a lot of walks), but part was because he missed a lot of games. By 1999, Barry Bonds had 50% more Wins Above Replacement than Duke posted in his entire career. I believe Duke did have more homers in the 50's than any other player though. With Willie, Mickey and the Duke as the three New York center fielders for a while, the talent was thick. But it was perhaps kind of like Willie and the Mick as 1A and 1B, with Duke clearly at #3. Can you imagine being as good as Duke though and being only the 3rd-best center fielder in your market? If we add Joe DiMaggio to the equation, Duke was only #4. Still, Duke finished in the top 10 in MVP votes six times -- in a seven-year stretch. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/2197/top-100-all-time?page=2#ixzz2vjX0RIYY
