dk..once more the stat nerd looks at data and comes up with a possible wrong conclusion....if a pitcher isn't throwing more strikes it COULD be he is hitting the batters weakness...which isn't always in the strike zone... Rog -- The likelihood isn't very large though. Rarely does a pitcher miss intentionally with his first pitch to the batter, since being ahead 0-1 usually produces far better results than being behind 1-0. Ricky's first-pitch strike percentage is down from 62.6% to 57.9%. His overall strike percentage is down, and he has walked more batter unintentionally. The signs that Ricky hasn't improved his control are clearly there. The ball is in your court. Ah, once more stats for the "average" guy...and may not fit the guy you are talking about...if a pitcher is getting hit on the first pitch, than he has to adapt to pitching off the plate to get the batter to chase....you sound like Vin Scully trying to use his new found stash of stats....last night, he was gushing on how the batter was deadly on first pitches...as the pitcher delivered the first pitch...Vin then takes his nose at of his crib sheet as the batter lines the 1-0 pitch for a hit and Vin gushes...see I told you, he kills that first pitch......other great things Vin came up with last night...Posey fell because he hit the out side of the bag instead of the inside...three replays show Posey strpping on the bag, but Vin never looks at replays....also, when it was plain as day that Arias felt something rounding second and went into an awkward pace pushing himself to home....Vin thought he was leaving the game because he got a "strawberry" sliding home....he also thought that it was bad score keeping when the RF got an error for mangling Posey's fly ball that he misjudged and had go off the tip of his glove...the score keeper changed his call......even the local paper said it should have been caught..... and as a foot note, Vin has started to second guess Donny Baseball....has management given him the nod to grease the skids for Mattingly???

Don -- if a pitcher is getting hit on the first pitch, than he has to adapt to pitching off the plate to get the batter to chase Rog -- Nolasco has given up 12 first-pitch hits to the 416 batters he has faced this season, so apparently it hasn't been a problem to overcome. The only Giants starter who has given up fewer is Madison Bumgarner, and Mad Bum is a considerably better pitcher than Ricky. I believe the ball is still in your court, Don.
