Randy --I'll give you Tim Lincecum ONLY because you know his dad personally and that is the only reason you praised him as early on as you are praising this Dodger newcomer.
Rog -- Check out this link. It was through this response to Richard VanZandt's original article (Tim Lincecum -- The Future) that I eventually met Tim's dad, Chris.
Although I suspect you would find it intriguing to see how Tim has turned out compared to the "scouting report" I sent Richard, I didn't re-read the thing myself. It's been a while, but I've read it more than once. Three things I would like you to take note of, though:
. First, note that I said that I didn't think I had seen as much movement with Tim's fastball as I saw with Matt Cain's. I also mentioned that I felt Matt could blow away hitters with his high, hard one better than Tim. (I still think so, by the way.) I also asked Richard if he thought Tim and Matt could become the Giants' top pitching duo since Marichal and Perry. (Which they pretty much have done.) So much for my not giving Matt any credit.
. Note too that the first time I saw Tim pitch -- shortly after he was drafted -- was at calleaguers.com. The video was shot when Tim pitched at Cal. Think that might have been before I knew Tim's dad?
. Note my descriptions of the time I saw Tim pitch for San Jose. Had I been able to attend Tim's first San Jose start, I might have had the chance to have already become acquainted with Chris. But because of a prior commitment, I missed that first start.
Fortunately I was able to learn a bit about that first start by reading Richard. By the way, Randy, Richard lives on the Peninsula. (I forget just where -- maybe Palo Alto.) I don't think that is too far from you. I suspect he would be an intriguing guy to go have a beer with.
